Francis McGuire (Mickey) Brown, 93, of Charleston, SC died Monday, March 9, 2026 at home. Services will be private.
Dr. Brown was born January 1, 1933 in Atlanta, GA, son of the late Robert Adamson Brown and Frances McGuire White Brown. He was a graduate of Henry Grady High School and Emory University where he earned both his Bachelor of Arts and his Doctor of Medicine. As a physician he served his country for 35 years. He began his career working in Public Health Services and went on to retire from the Department of Veterans Affairs having served over 32 years at the Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was also a retiree of the Medical University of South Carolina where he taught for many years. He was a longtime member of the Emory University Alumni Association and a proud member of Clan MacMillan. For many years he pursued pottery making as a hobby and enjoyed attending the arts, music and theater available to him in Charleston.
Dr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife Mary Frances (Fran) Brown, his former wife Audrey Brown, his sister Roberta Armstrong, and his son-in-law John Kacala.
Surviving are his daughters Karin Shaffer and her husband, Lang, III of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Linda Kacala of Charleston, SC, Rosemary Harker and her husband, Chris of Norfolk, VA, Gretchen Aurin and her husband, Dirk of Bowie, MD; his sons Angus and Taylor Brown both of Charleston, SC; and his step-son Jason Summers, his wife, Lisa, and their sons, Collier and Abram, of Edisto Island, SC; his grandchildren Cassidy and Walter, IV of Mt. Pleasant, SC and McGuire Shaffer of Overland Park, KA, Francis and Patrick Harker both of Norfolk, VA, Jaxson Brown, and James Brown both of Charleston, SC, Melissa Kacala Diamond and her daughter Avea Diamond both of Charleston, SC and Jonathan Kacala and his wife, Sara of Charlotte, NC; his Niece Kathi DuTilly of Staunton, VA, and his nephews Michael Armstrong and his wife, Linda Dragas, and Chris Armstrong all of Virginia Beach, VA.
Memorials may be made to the Gibbes Museum of Art, the ETV Endowment, or to a charity of your choice.
