Thomas Myers Obituary

Thomas Engelhard Myers, Jr. Mt. Pleasant - Thomas E. Myers, Jr., 75, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Debra Uricchio Myers died Monday at home in Mt. Pleasant of causes related to Lewy Body with Alzheimer's disease. His funeral service will be held Sunday, May 1, 2016 in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 67 Anson Street at 3:00 p.m. Interment, St. Philip's Churchyard. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street. The oldest of five children born to Tom and Betty (Elizabeth Norcorss) Myers, Tom was a loving and generous man throughout his life and is mourned by many. He was born on November 25, 1940, at Roper Hospital and attended The Gaud School in Charleston and Phillips Academy (Andover), graduated from The University of the South (Sewanee) in 1962 and Harvard Business School in 1964. Tom worked on Wall Street for 13 years, returned to his beloved Charleston in 1977 and founded Disher, Hamrick and Myers with Brownie Hamrick and Johnny Disher. After many years in real estate, he created We Are Family, in 1993, to serve the individuals, families and loved ones of the gay community. For the last 14 years, Tom owned and operated VoDon custom framing with his wife Debra. Tom sat on the board at Bishop Gadsden several times and was a member of the St. Cecilia Society, St. Andrew's Society, the Charleston Club and many others. Tom attended St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. He was physically active all his life, a passionate runner from his twenties, and reached his physical peak, literally, when he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. He learned to dive in the murky Charleston waters and the clearer glory of the Caribbean. He learned to sky dive and did, without a scratch. Tom is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 24 years, Debra Uricchio Myers; along with his son, Thomas and his daughter, Zoe; step-daughter, Paulann Rhodes and four grandchildren. He loved and supported them unconditionally and was proud of all they achieved. Other survivors include his stepmother, Jeanne; his sisters: Mary, Ellen and Posey and their husbands and children; his sons-in-law, Vincent Gibiat and Nicklaus Rhodes, and his ex-wife, Maureen. Tom was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Betsy and a grandson, Blaze. Memorials may be made to We Are Family, 29 Leinbach Dr, Charleston, SC 29407 and/or Charleston Respite Care, 405 King Street, Charleston, SC 29403 and/or the Bishop Gadsden Residents Fund, One Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412. A special thanks to Marshall Newton, M.D. for all of his loving care and compassion as well as Laura Stefanelli and the entire group at Charleston Respite Care. I have many occasions to think about Tom and our times together as I walk down paths that we once walked together day-in-and-day-out. Great guy and friend. Sorely missed, but warmly remembered.

I was actually thinking of Tom today (we were classmates at Andover and roommates at Harvard Business School) and reflecting on Tom's impatience with any form of what he called "pretense." This voice, value, and ethical sense resonates with me constantly. We miss Tom greatly, but he is still touching us.

I was sorry to learn about Tom's death. His life was important to many. Although I did not know him well, years ago I appreciated the compassion and insight that led him to form We Are Family at a time when it was sorely needed by an ignorant public. I admired Tom, and he is the proof that the life a person lives lives on after death.

Tom was my friend and classmate at Phillips Academy, Andover. We were roommates at the Harvard Business School. We knew each other and enjoyed each other for many years. I knew Tom and visited his family in Charleston. Tom knew and visited my family on holidays in Swampscott. I am so sad to hear the news of Tom's passing. He was truly extra-ordinary personbrilliant, warm, self-reflexive, and a man of impeccable personal values. This is a great loss for friends as well as family.

Tom was one of the first people that I met when I moved to Charleston - a warm, welcoming presence. I was impressed by his passion for justice and support for the LGBTQ community, advocacy that was rare at the time in Charleston. His founding of We Are Family provided a safe haven for many. My sympathy and prayers go out to Debra and his family as they celebrate Tom's life and mourn his passing.

Since we graduated from Andover in 1958, we've seen Tom only during periodic class reunions. In a very few, character developes early. Tom's soundness was apparent immediately and he was respected and admired by all of us. Years later, Tom was of immense help when we learned one our sons was gay. Tom's advise and guidance were invaluable. He truly is one of the good guys!

My family and I are forever grateful to Tom for founding and supporting We Are Family. I am not sure we would have survived those early years in Charleston without the support it provided us, and the wonderful people we met because of it. We remember Tom, and appreciate his contribution to our world.
