Thomas Doggett Obituary

Tee and I were classmates at boarding school in New Hampshire. I will always remember him as an intrepid athlete with an indomitable spirit and a "can-do" attitude towards life. Whether it was playing lacrosse or performing downhill ski jumping, Tee was always a focused and determined sportsman. He was well liked by his friends and respected by all. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Tee was an excellent architect. I enjoyed working with him on the Double Tree Inn (formerly Hawthorne Suites) in downtown Charleston twenty years ago. His talent will surely be missed.

I can't help but respond with tremendous shock. We just spoke at the last CofC basketball game. Again, Tom and I sat next to each other. You couldn't make it that night. I am so sorry for your sudden loss. Although we only know each other through "distant" tennis, I wanted you to know my deepest sympathy is sent to you.

The dictionary states "a mentor is a friend and advisor." Tee was my mentor in many things. Tee taught me patience. Tee taught me that you don't need to raise your voice when communicating, I do not recall a single instance where I heard him raise his voice. Tee showed that the voice of wisdom does not need to be loud. When Tee spoke, people listened. He was a voice of reason, fairness, and kindness. Tee was respected and revered.
Tee enforced in me that family always comes first. No matter where we were Tee would not leave the country without buying a gift for Pamela. On trips with full schedules this often required a wild last minute trip to local markets, but he always went home with something for her. Tee would suddenly leave a dinner, or a meeting, simply stating, “I need to call Pamela”. I learned quickly she was everything to him, she was always in his thoughts.
Tee's was an adventurer. Not in a wild or reckless manner as he had a calm demeanor and presence that he used when things got tough. After Tee convinced one of the hotel managers to ‘rent' us his personal car we then drove across the middle of Africa were we ‘accidentally' wandered around the fences and under the bridge to get a ‘better photo' of the Victoria Falls. Tee used all of his calming powers to get us back across the border into Zambia when a couple of AK-47 armed soldiers questioned how we ended up in Zimbabwe with no papers. He was just too nice to not get his way. He really wanted that picture and eventually not only did we get the photo, Tee got one of them in the photo with him. Winning with kindness was his best weapon.
Tee was a gifted and talented architect. There are many structures, throughout the world, that Tee has designed using the skills he worked hard to develop and the talents he was blessed with. From the re-adaptive design of some of the major hotels and structures in Charleston to houses on four continents Tee's designs will be enjoyed and used by generations.
We are all poorer with the loss of Tee. Tee's physical presence has been taken away from us. But, I believe that his memories will always be here. We are all reflections of those around us. Our relationship with Tee will continue through those he has mentored in architecture and engineering, and through those who will try to ‘be a little like Tee' in our actions and deeds. That bond is everlasting, ever nourishing, and eternal. Tee's death reminds us that life is short, time is precious, and that only those are remembered who have lived life to the fullest and have given back a lot in return. Every time I meet someone as positive and inspirational as Tee I will recall his name with fondness.
I simply wish that if Tee were to be born again on this beautiful planet that I may once again know him, be his friend, and that he live the same life leaving many more people grateful and touched by what Tee brought with him. I will always be proud to have worked with Tee, to have learned from him, and most importantly to call him friend.
Thank you Tee for allowing me to be a part of your life.

I am so saddened by the terrible news of Tee's passing. I have known Tee for many years - first in my real estate appraisal life and more recently as his leasing broker. I will miss his calm demeanor and quick wit.
