Susan Meyer Obituary

Susan Meyer Charleston - It is with profound sadness and much love that we mourn the passing of Susan J. Meyer, age 79, of Charleston. She passed away November 7, 2021, and will be greatly missed by her daughter Violet Meyer of North Charleston, South Carolina. Born on October 28, 1942, in New York City, Susan was the daughter of the late Philip Wortman and Ethel Brand Wortman. Susan was a proud alum of the University of Pittsburgh, where she received her Bachelor's Degree. After college, she immediately attended graduate school at the State University of New York - Buffalo, where she earned a Master's Degree in Psychology. As a young adult, she was a self-proclaimed hippie and carried those messages of peace and love from that era throughout her life. Susan was passionate about education and had the pleasure of teaching for 28 fulfilling years. She served as the Department Head of Special Education at College Park Middle School, in Ladson, South Carolina for many years and held the National Board for Professional Teachers standard certification. Susan was an active member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), a community and collegiate service organization, where she was involved in fundraising for causes, such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Her daughter often joked that she should have worked in sales, as she missed no opportunity to seek donations for this cause that meant so much to her. Upon retiring from teaching, Susan enjoyed reading and passing time with friends and her daughter. She was a talented amateur photographer and could spend hours organizing her photos and scrapbooks. The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at the Daniel Pointe Retirement Community for their care and compassion over these most recent years. A memorial service will be held for Susan at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home in Goose Creek, at 3 pm on Saturday, November 13th, and those attending are welcome to incorporate Susan's favorite colors of pink and purple. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Susan`s memory can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, her longtime fundraising cause, or Zoo Atlanta, where she particularly enjoyed the panda project.
