Stephen Blackwood Obituary

Stephen Blackwood AWENDAW - Stephen Blackwood passed from this earth on August 12, 2014 in Awendaw, South Carolina. He was born fifty-three years ago in Landstuhl, Germany. He had a love of place for the East Cooper area. As a young man behind the wheel of his mighty Road Runner, later riding his Harley Davidson and lastly, exploring the forests and trails with his faithful dog, Patches, at his side. Stephen served with honor and distinction in the United States Marine Corps, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. His passion and expertise for all things mechanical led to a second career as an automotive, equipment and small engine mechanic of unmatched skill and technique. He knew a love of the outdoors and possessed a green thumb, exercising it in the garden, growing exceptional fruits and vegetables season after season. He enjoyed helping others, and was quick with a smile or good joke. In this time of passing, the family will conduct private services. A commemorative with his name will be placed at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park Veterans War Memorial. His many friends are encouraged to share a memory at www.palmettocremationsociety.com. Memorial donations may be made to: The American Cancer Society; 249 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401. Arrangements by PALMETTO CREMATION SOCIETY, 11 Cunnington Ave., Charleston, SC 29405, (843) 722-2555. Online condolences may be left at www.palmettocremationsociety.com. Stephen and I went to Wando High School together. He would come by and we would have lunch. We became brothers of different mothers. After school, we would both drive children home in school buses.

Steven joined the Marines and returned a proud Marine. He didn't have a place to stay but came by and asked for my sleeping bag. He had so many friends and was always camping out. I didn't see Stephen again until I needed a chain saw fixed and went to Hughes. It was good to see him. They told me it would take 3 weeks. Stephen heard that and took my chain saw and had it fixed in a half hour. He was incredible.

Not a day went by that Steven didn't talk about the good Lord. He had more faith than most and it was always a joy to get together with him.

Stephen was the best friend I ever had and will be sadly missed.

I love you Bro. May God Bless you.

I was saddenned yesterday to drive by Hughes and see "RIP Sarge Blackwood" on the sign.

I only met Sarge once, in the store, when my two small boys (3&4 years old at the time, if not a little younger) begged me to take them in there to look at the tools.

Sarge took them under his wing and had them captivated. The highlight was his magic disappearing thumb trick which they absolutely loved and remember to this day (even though several years have passed).

In our conversation that afternoon it was also clear how much he cherished his faith and his church. He took pride in a garden he'd planted at the church and encouraged us to go see it, which we did.

The world lost a good man, but heaven gained one.

I never knew Sarges first name but came in contact with him often over the past 5 years. As a military member frequenting Hughes, he would always go out of his way to greet me and tell me his war stories. He obviously loved the lord and knew his place on this earth was to serve others, and he exceled at that. This world is a better place because of Sarge, his legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him. God Bless you Sarge and until we meet again! SMSgt Brad Kuhn, Charleston AFB

Sarge, you were my right hand in so many ways at church. From simple things like making sure I had water for when I preached (as well as the anonymous note you left by the glass one day, asking, "Do you ever wonder what may be in your water?), to the handling of many other tasks at the church, all done without question or complaint. Our church was not just a part of your life, but it was your life; and it's demise hurt and impacted you and others deeply. Yet we trust in the loving grace of our Savior, who understands our griefs and pains. I look forward to the day I once again hear that familiar voice, full of enthusiasm saying, "Hey, Pastor!" At ease, Marine, as you rest in God's presence.

My dear friend Sarge,

My heart is so fill but I know you are in a better place. Sarge had a heart of gold. I am truly going to miss you. I want to thank God for allowing you to come into my life. You look beyond color and embrace everyone. Every time we spoke with each other, you would close out saying Martha, I love you like you were my sister, but you are my sister in Christ. Sleep on my brother and take your rest, you will always be in my heart.

In high school Steve would crash at our house a lot. My parents loved all of his crazy stories of his antics.
We quit school and joined the Marines and even there, a world away from Isle of Palms, fate brought us together. In Okinawa we spent many days snorkeling and nights trying to impress the local girls. In NC, me, Steve, and Greg White were stationed close together at New River, Geiger, and Johnson and Steve was the glue that held us together.
Steve has been assigned the ultimate Marine Corps job now . . . guarding the Gates of Heaven.
Semper Fi buddy and I'll stand guard there with you one day ~ chuck

I met Steve in the school cafeteria at Wando in 1977. He made quite the impression, as he was flinging peas with a spoon. He came and visited me with our friend George Graham while on was on mess duty in boot camp at Parris Island in 1982, then let me crash in the NCO quarters at Geiger while I was a Private at Johnson. I always enjoyed receiving letters from him when we were stationed apart from one another. They were highly entertaining, even when he wrote from Beirut that he had a camera to shoot with. He was a photographer in the Corps and I still have many pictures he took. Steve was a great acey-deucy player and my best friend in the 1980's. I will always miss him. Here's to you Sergeant "Mopar" Blackwood. God loves you and I love you.

Stephen was the epitome of what every U.S. Marine should be. He was a man of honor and never complained no matter how great his suffering was. He was one of the most wonderful Christians that I have ever known. He was a true servant of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and presented the Gospel Message to everyone he met. He blessed hundreds of people, providing boots to those who had no shoes, or wood to those who had no heat, food where there was none, or any other need. I was one of those blessed by my precious friend, Stephen, and I will never forget it.

How I will miss his beautiful, strong voice reading the Psalms every Sunday at our church…and those amazing suppers he cooked by himself at Bible Study. Most of all, I will miss his calls just to see how I was.

I rejoice for Stephen because he is no longer suffering and is home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ…where he longed to be. However, I loved him dearly and will always miss him.

My heartfelt sympathy to Tracie, Hunter, Chris...and all of Stephen's family,
Evelyn Squires

I dearly loved Sarge as a friend and brother in Christ. He taught my brother and I many things and was a true friend that would go out of his way to help anyone he could. His sense of humor was always on display and he always took any opportunity to share his faith in Jesus Christ. He struggled with many ailments and scars that few can understand, but he is at ease and Christ has welcomed his son home.

Very Sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I will forever remember his hearty laugh, kind heart and "pond hopping" in the forest at the break of dawn to catch the first fish. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

First of all, Sarge was a Christian. In remembering him,it wasn't about his past life, but the present present one he lives. His living didn't stop when he left this earth. He has an eternitiy to go according to God's word.
His greatest compassion, was serving the Lord(Jesus Christ), being His witness every where he went, and giving his personal Testimony. Sarge humbled and yeilded himself, so the Lord's light could shine through him to all who knew Sarge and those who didn't. Sarge knew the calling of his Heavenly Father and Sarge went to Him. He was prepared because he knew that he had a home that was already prepared and waiting on him that was promised to him through his Savior,(Jesus Christ) The only way to go, and Sarge knew it.
