Simone Smith Obituary

Simone Antoinette Rose Smith CHARLESTON - Simone Antoinette Rose Smith, 91, died Thursday, September 9, 2021. Simone was born January 6, 1930 in Strasbourg, France, daughter of Oscar Wetzel and Augusta Kettela. Simone was a widow and predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Wade Hampton Smith, Master Sergeant US Air Force (Ret.) She is survived by her two sons: Marc Oscar Smith and wife, Lynn of Charleston and Michael Marcel Smith and wife, Melyssa of Charleston; five grandchildren: Thomas and wife, Becky, Sara and husband, Grant, Marc, Jr., Renee and Reagan. She survived the German occupation of France during WW2. Her legacy of strength and stories of perseverance inspired her children and grandchildren. She had her son, Marc, while still in France, and her son, Michael, in Hahn, Germany. Marc loved being doted upon by his French mother and grandmother (Mamama). Wade and Simone met while he was stationed in France. Simone could speak three languages: German, French and English. Her French customs took some getting used to, but made for many good family stories. She was known for her French accent, sharp tongue, and her love of fashion. She was an excellent cook and loved sweets. She also loved pets. She had many cats and dogs in her lifetime and they were all well fed. Her grandchildren loved playing in her closet and being fed by her. There will be no funeral or viewing. There, however, will be a Celebration of Life Memorial at a later date. The family would like to recognize some wonderful ladies who were "momma Simone's" caregivers and friends during her final months. Thank you Lakeisha Manigault, Geneva Smith, Teresa Thompson, Patrice Singleton and Jackie Haynes Williams. We love you. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston
