Shirley Chapman Obituary

Shirley Chapman SPANISH FORT, AL - January 15, 1943 - September 2, 2024 Shirley Anne Powell Chapman, a native of Birmingham, AL, and a resident of Spanish Fort, AL, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024, at the age of 81. Shirley was a 1960 graduate of West End High School in Birmingham, AL. She graduated Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, MS in 1964. Shirley began her teaching career in Smith Station, AL, in 1964 in Health and Physical Education. She also taught in Georgia and North Carolina, and continued teaching in Summerville, SC, (Dorchester County District 2) from 1976-1993 and in Jacksonville, FL, from 1994-2007. Shirley is preceded in death by her father, R.C. Powell; her mother, Martha Weir Eitson; brother, Michael Powell; stepfather, Scott Eitson; aunts, Mary Lorene Weir Carpenter, Lucille Weir, Claudia Giddings and Georgia Campbell; and uncles, BC Carpenter, Howard Weir, Ernest Weir, Hoyt Giddings and Robert Campbell. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Wilbur Larry Chapman; her children, Scott (Michele) Chapman of Daphne, AL, and Susan (Mark) Gentry of Orlando, FL; three granddaughters, Riley Nicole Chapman, Kerigan Reece Chapman and Ansley Grace Gentry; and one grandson, Mahlon Thomas Gentry. A celebration of her life will be held at Westminster Village, 500 Spanish Fort Blvd., in Spanish Fort, AL, on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 11AM. Hughes Funeral Home, Daphne, AL, is assisting the family.
