Sheilah Simmons Obituary

Sheilah Forsythe Simmons CHARLESTON - Sheilah Forsythe Simmons, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Dr. Charles W. Simmons, entered into eternal rest Friday, September 23, 2022. Sheilah was born August 17, 1936, in Washington, DC, daughter of the late John L. Forsythe and Lillian Evans Forsythe. She graduated from Dunbar High School in 1954, went on to earn her bachelor's degree from D.C. Teachers College and began her career in the D.C. school system teaching first and second grades. Sheilah then taught in the Charleston and Des Moines school systems and retired in 1998 from Dunston Elementary School in Charleston as a Reading Recovery Specialist. After retirement, she volunteered with "Book Buddies", a free program that brings children and volunteers together to share the joy of reading. Above all, Sheilah loved her daughter, Monica; her family; her friends; and her church. Her favorite pastimes were working crossword puzzles with her son-in-law, John; reading; playing games online; traveling and coming up with any reason for a party because it was always "5 o' clock somewhere!" She is survived by her daughter, Monica L. Hammonds; son-in-law, John R. Hammonds; sister, Madrainne F. Johnson; brother-in-law, William H. Underdue (Marilyn); sister-in-law, Farris B. Forsythe; nephew, Keith M. Johnson (Stacy); nieces, Angela T. Underdue, Fern L. Underdue, Alia Harvey (Philip); and grandnephews, Julian Johnson, Kyle Johnson, and Dominic Frazier. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 16 Thomas Street, Charleston, SC, at 11am. To Shelia´s Family and Friends and especially you Monica because I feel as though I know you.

I had the privilege of being a classroom aide for your mother over 48 years ago under the Title I Reading Program. Working with Shelia had a profound effect on my life and that of my son who was in kindergarten at the time. She allowed him to spend the second half of each day in the room with us and our older students learning how to read, write and count. Her kindness and encouragement inspired lifelong learning and sharing for him. She taught me how to teach my children and continue to honor her to this day by working with young children. I regret not telling her how well things turned out for us and how much I appreciated her, so I am telling you. When we weren´t talking about my life, we were talking about you. Please know that I loved and admired your mom, and my heart is with you and your family.

Sending love, prayers and hugs your way...
