Robert Hartman Obituary

Robert B. D. Hartman Culver, IN - Robert Blaydes Duerson Hartman died Friday, July 28, 2017, in Culver, Indiana. A native of Blacksburg, Virginia, he was the only child of William Tyler Hartman and Elizabeth Duerson Hartman. Bob graduated from Charleston High School and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Charleston. He was a proud member of the Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity. He later earned masters' degrees from the University of Virginia and Indiana University. Bob was a lifelong educator and prep school administrator, serving 55 years on the faculty and staff at The Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana. He achieved the rank of Master Instructor, the highest rank held by Academy faculty, and held the McMillen Family Chair of American Heritage. He served as Director of Admissions, Alumni Director, Executive Secretary of the Culver Educational Foundation, and Executive Secretary of the Centennial Commission, which chronicled the one-hundred year anniversary of Culver in 1994. He was later named Culver's historian and archivist and spent the last 20 years of his career publishing multiple books and vignettes that brought to life Culver's most important people, places, events, and traditions. In 2013, the endowed Robert B. D. Hartman Chair for Excellence in Teaching was created. A Memorial Service, led by The Reverend Thomas E. Haynes, will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 10 a.m. in Culver's Memorial Chapel. Bob will be interred in Culver. Contributions may be made to the CMA '62 Bob Hartman Endowed Scholarship Fund, which was established earlier this year by former students from the Class of 1962.
