Robert Hart, Sr. CHARLESTON - Robert M. Hart, Sr. entered into eternal rest on April 23, 2012 in the loving arms of his wife Peggy and surrounded by his family. Robert was born on April 6, 1932 in Charleston, SC, the son of Sadie Thigpen Hart Herndon and John Hart. Robert was a wonderful husband to his wife Peggy Benton Hart and a loving father to his five children. Robert was the owner of Hart Roofing & Sheet Metal Company, Inc. which he began in 1961. He was voted into the Who's Who of Executive Professionals in 1974. He received recognition as an outstanding citizen of South Carolina in 1975. He was named into the Who's Who Internationally of Global Business Leaders in 1993. He was also a part of the Who's Who of American Executives. He was a semi-finalist for "Construction Executive for Superior Performance of the Year" in 1994. He began the Greater Charleston Roofing Association in 1991. Robert was a private pilot and a life member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks. Robert was respected and loved by all who knew him. He made an impact on many lives with his laughter and stern but yet loving ways. He was a lover of practical jokes. Robert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy Hart; his children, Robert Hart, Jr. (Tammy), Linda Hart, Teresa Cox (Curt), Katherine Roper (Steven), and Thomas Hart (Alicia); his five grandchildren, Brent Gorman, Matthew Hart, Emily Roper, Penelope Roper, Sadie Roper, Samuel Hart; his step grandchildren, Nikki Purvis, Cassie Purvis, Ryan Purvis, Alicia Sellars, and Lisa Crosby; his step great grandchildren, Brittany Wilson, Cameron Wilson, Jordan Sigmon, Michael Cox, and Chris Cox; two brothers, JG Herndon, and Eugene Lane; five sisters, Ethel Castellonos, Miriam Hart, Sadie Mae Cook, Nancy Moore, and Mildred Tisdale; and a host of nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his mother, Sadie Thigpen Hart Herndon; his father, John Hart; three brothers, John Hart, Jack Hart and EJ Herndon; and one sister, Rhonda Haynes. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Thursday, April 26, 2012, at McALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 2501 BEES FERRY ROAD, CHARLESTON, SC 29414. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 11:00 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church which is located at 5 St. Teresa Dr. Charleston, SC 29407.
