Robert Dickson Obituary

DICKSON, Robert Robert Dickson, 89, husband of the late Charlotte Buist Dickson, of Mt. Pleasant, SC died on Saturday, August 18, 2007. A private graveside service was held on Monday, August 27, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at Magnolia Cemetery. Arrangements by: J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Mr. Dickson was born January 16, 1918, in New York, New York, son of late Noel Dickson and Estelle Woollatt Dickson. For many, many years Bob Dickson was a prominent figure on the tennis courts of Charleston. He and his wife Charlotte Buist Dickson were both very competitive Players. Bob held numerous titles in tennis, including Men's Singles Champion for several years in a row. After he gave up competing, he continued to go to the courts several days a week, spending an hour or more in long rallies with his friend Ronald Anderson. Up until a few weeks before his death, Bob could still be found on the tennis court, though his endurance was down to 10-15 minutes. He finally gave it up, saying he thought playing into his 90th year was a pretty good accomplishment. Longstanding members of the Charleston tennis community will certainly enjoy recalling his remarkable tennis career. Surviving are his sister, Shirley Jansen of Santa Barbara, CA, a niece, Susan Estelle Corbett of Bel Air, CA, and his special tennis friend, Ronald Anderson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Robert and Charlotte Dickson Endowed Tennis Scholarship Fund, c/o The College of Charleston, Sottil House, 11 College Way, Charleston, SC 29424 or Hospice of Charleston, Hospice Center Fund 3870 Leeds Avenue, Suite 101, Charleston, SC 29405-7493. I played basketball at cofc in the early 50s. I remember what great fans Bob and Charlotte were at all athletic events. He hit balls with the best players on the cofc tennis team and added to their successes with his advice. Any of us from the 50s and beyond will always remember them fondly.

I had the opportunity to get to know Bob as only a daughter could know a father. I lived with Charlotte and Bob for three months and stayed with them every Friday my entire life growing up. The fondest memory I have was when he helped me with my History lessons as I was taking exams. To this day my love of history of the past which ultimatley becomes our future ( history repeats itself) will always be apart of me. He was a very quiet strong influence over me and my life. His one true pet Marco( adopted from a previous tenant) and how he would throw the (tennis) ball continuously for hours and amazingly the dog would retreve every one.The one car wreck he ever had I was in the passenger seat after picking me up from an orthodontist apt. He was not at fault but acted with kindness and grace even though the lady that hit us was screaming and yelling. He loved to run a self made track in his yard on Ashley Ave. after years of running the same cirlce it was embedded in the ground. He was one of character and ruitine. So many memories and so little space to write them. If anyone reads this and would like to share any memories please contact me.
