Richard Horne Obituary

Richard Porcher Horne, Sr. BOYNTON BEACH, FL - Richard Porcher "Dick" Horne, age 84, of Boynton Beach, Florida, peacefully passed away on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, 2024. Friends and family are invited to a visitation from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM this Saturday, November 23, 2024, at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, at 1308 Mathis Ferry Road. His funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Seacoast Church in Mount Pleasant, located at 750 Long Point Road. After the service, he will be laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Dick was born on January 8, 1940 in Orangeburg and raised in Beaufort, South Carolina. He was the second son of the late John Davison Horne and Elizabeth Hammond Eve. He began playing golf at 11 and quickly became an exceptional Beaufort High School Golf Team member by the 7th grade. Dick graduated from Sewanee Military Academy in Tennessee and later from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, in 1962. As a cadet, he excelled as a captain on the Golf Team, winning the Southern Conference as co-champion and the SC Intercollegiate Golf Championships. After graduation, Dick served honorably in the United States Army, where he had the opportunity to play in the All-Army tournament alongside "Sarg" Orville Moody while stationed in Germany. After his military service, Dick met and married Anne Hall in Aiken, SC, in 1966, while they both worked for SC Electric & Gas Company. Afterward, he enrolled in the University of South Carolina School of Law on the GI Bill. In 1971, he returned to Charleston with his growing family to continue his insurance career with John Hancock Life Insurance Company. In 1977, he established the Dick Horne Health Insurance Agency, which became one of the state's largest independent agencies, notably representing Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, among others. Over his 40-year insurance career, Dick formed countless friendships, often closing business deals on the golf course. After retiring from John Hancock in 1997, he sold his agency in 2000 to dedicate more time to competitive senior international amateur golf. As a golfer, Dick achieved many accolades locally, nationally, and abroad. He founded The Rice Planters Amateur Golf Championship, played at Snee Farm Country Club in Mount Pleasant, SC, every year since 1973. In 1999, Dick was ranked 9th best Senior Amateur in America by Golf Digest after winning the South Carolina Senior Amateur Championship as well as the American Senior Golf Association Stroke Play, Match Play and Four-Ball Championships consecutively. He has been inducted into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame, the Club at Quail Ridge Sports Hall of Fame, and the Citadel Sports Hall of Fame, and he notably won the Bermuda Amateur Championship in 1984, 1985, and 1986. Despite his numerous achievements on the golf course, Dick valued more profound blessings. He publicly declared his faith in Christ through baptism at Seacoast Church and cherished his 47-year marriage to Anne and their three children and six grandchildren. Known for his warmth and charm, Dick built lasting friendships both on and off the golf course across the Lowcountry, South Florida, and beyond, earning him the reputation of being a quintessential "Southern Gentleman." Dick Horne was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anne Hall Horne. He is survived by his children: son, Richard Porcher Horne, Jr. (Carrie) of Mount Pleasant, SC; daughters, Sandra Horne Cheves (Hank) of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Catherine Anne Horne (Joe Hicks) of South Carolina; as well as his grandchildren: Middleton Horne Cheves, Charles Pinckney Cheves, Langdon Hall Cheves, Olivia Porcher Horne, SarahAnne Sullivan Horne and Laura Elizabeth Horne. Flowers can be delivered to Stuhr's Mount Pleasant Chapel, and charitable donations may be made to Seacoast Church, Boca Raton Community Church, and the SC Junior Golf Association. The family welcomes memorial messages, which can be sent via a tribute page at http://www.jhenrystuhr.com.

My deepest sympathy to Dick's family and many friends. I grew up with his sister Carol. Dick was charming and we loved when he brought Anne to Beaufort and announced they were engaged in 1966. The Horne home in Beaufort was a wonderful gathering place for us as teenagers.
