He passed peacefully in his sleep with his wife by his side in Summerville, SC. His daughter, Amy Nester, was of immeasurable help being able to live with us from Sept. 26th through Dec. 21st. All of his children, some of his grandchildren, most of his brothers and sisters, were able to come shortly before his death to tell him how much they loved him. Ray was born in Canandaigua, NY on May 22, 1945. He was predeceased by his father, Raymond Wilson Nester, his mother, Evelyn Lawrence Nester, his brothers, Steve Nester, Davis Nester and Fred Nester. Ray was the oldest of twelve children and grew up in Martinsville, VA. He joined the Air Force in 1963 at the age of 18. When he got out of the AirForce, he became an Air Traffic Controller at the Dulles Airport in Washington DC. He had his picture in the Smithsonian as being the youngest man ever to teach Air Traffic Controllers. Ray was a very spiritual man and a great teacher. Being a member of MENSA, he was quite the wordsmith and had compassion and love for everyone. He touched many lives in his 78 years and was surely a gift to everyone who met him. He has always said I am here by Grace. Now he is with God and his loved ones in heaven. Until we meet again... He donated his body as an Anatomical Gift to the Medical University of South Carolina. There will be a service Nov 2024 at the MUSC Chapel for immediate family.
