Ralph Geldbart Obituary

Ralph G. Geldbart BOYNTON BEACH, FL - Dr. Ralph G. Geldbart, 87, of Boynton Beach, FL., formerly of Charleston, passed away on March 9, 2011. Dr. Geldbart was born in Charleston, SC, February 21, 1924. He attended the Citadel and during WWII participated in the D Day invasion in Normandy, France on Omaha Beach. He was wounded twenty-nine days later and presented with the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for bravery in action. Dr. Geldbart graduated from the University of Chicago and the Illinois College of Optometry and practiced Optometry in Charleston for approximately 50 years. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, B'nai Brith, Allocation Committee of the Jewish Federation, Past President of Synagogue Emanu-El and one of the founders of the Mended Hearts Chapter at Roper-St. Francis Hospital where he served as Treasurer for six years. Dr. Geldbart is survived by his loving and caring wife of 57 years, Madolyn Cohen Geldbart; two daughters: Laurie Shapiro (Ira) of Washington Township, NJ, Jill Gardner (Steven) of Atlanta, grandchildren Rachel Weigensberg (Stuart) of Boston, Jessica Ackerson (Matthew) of Chicago, Dana and Matthew Gardner of Atlanta, GA, and a great-granddaughter, Jenna Weigensberg of Boston. Services will be held at Synagogue Emanu-El at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, March 13, 2011, followed by interment in Emanu-El Cemetery, "Maryville". Contributions may be made in his memory to Synagogue Emanu-El, 5 Windsor Drive, Charleston, SC 29407 or Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, W. Palm Beach, FL, 33407-2387. I worked for Dr Gelbart in the early 90s. He was the best boss. I felt like a family member not just an employee. I never knew we shared the same birthday, February 21. Rest in peace

Lynn + I wish to express our sincere condolences to Madolyn,Laurie,+ Jill and their respective family,s on the loss of her husband and their father and father-in-law and grandfather. He will truly be missed.
In the short period that we had to know Ralph he endeared himself to us not only with his wit and charm but for his elegance .He truly epitimised a southern gentleman
