Paula Alston Obituary

Paula Kay Alston DALLAS, TX - Paula Kay Alston was born the eighth of ten children to William and Gloria Jean Alston. Growing up in a large family, in a northern Chicago suburb, Paula was always full of life and energy. Paula was an astute athlete and would go on to play competitive basketball. Additionally, as a part of a movement that brought tennis to minorities, Paula helped to break down many racial barriers through sports and was a constant proponent of equity and inclusion. Ever since grade school, Paula excelled academically, graduating with honors as a member of the National Honor Society. Her educational pursuits led her to earn a Bachelors of Science degree in computer science. Her career pursuits would ultimately lead her to a position with Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina where she worked for 20 years and from which she would eventually depart on disability as a Systems Analyst. Paula developed a love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at a very early age and was thus baptized by Rev. H.J. Cook of Gideon Missionary Baptist Church. Paula served in varying capacities including the youth department and choir. She continued her love for praising God and would become an active member of the Baptist Student Union at Southern Illinois University. While there, she married and became the mother of four wonderful children who she adored and to whom she gave her all. Paula Kay would later relocate to Columbia, SC where she became a member of what is now The Potter's Christian Life Center, Pastored by Greg Formey. Paula loved her church and served her God and community throughout her tenure. Anyone who ever encountered Paula Kay Alston came to love her and know her for her giving spirit, her love for her family and her absolute commitment to Christ. Paula Kay Alston made her transition to heaven on November 24, 2013. Paula was preceded in death by her daughter Gloria Jean Brown; her father, William Alston and her two siblings Patricia and Rhea Alston. She is survived by her three children, Joy Boyd (Anthony), William Brown and Stephanie Brown; her mother, Gloria Alston; her siblings: Mary Alston, Constance "Terry" Parker (Jerry), William "Barry" Alston, Rebecca "Becky" Calhoun (Bobby), Susan Marie "Susie" and Oran Alston; a host of nieces and nephews; surrogate children; extended family, friends, colleagues and fellow parishioners. We will forever miss Paula's dedication and unselfish spirit. She is now resting pain-free in the arms of her beloved Savior. Her Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in Emanuel AME Church, 110 Calhoun Street, Charleston. Interment, Emanuel AME Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, in the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. To the Alston family, I want to extend my deepest condolences belated. I didn't find out about Paula's passing until the WEHS class of 78 reunion this year. Paula and I were good friends and competitors in high school. My heart is truly saddened by this news, but I know she's in a better place.

To all the Alston family, my sincere condolences go out to you in the loss of Paula. She was a sweet and loving person and always a positive person. To the children, you were so blessed to have your mom in your life this long. Just remember the things that she has taught you and you will be okay. She was a very spiritual person and loved the Lord! I'm sure she is in a better place now. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May God bless you all.

Sincerely,
Doris Rothwell-Williams
