Paul Moore Obituary

Paul Hagan "Bud" Moore Hollywood, SC - Mr. Paul Hagan "Bud" Moore died at his home in Hollywood, South Carolina on August 1, 2017. Bud is survived by his wife, Ida Elizabeth Hutchinson Moore and daughter, Sherry Moore Graves, both of Charleston, South Carolina. He is preceded in death by his father, Elmer Moore of Tipprell, Tennessee and mother, Virginia Victoria Money Moore of Big Stone Gap, Virginia. He was born on December 7, 1940 in Charleston, South Carolina. He met his wife Ida at Rivers High School where both would graduate in 1958. Bud was an accomplished stock car driver and entrepreneur. His NASCAR career in the Sportsman and Grand National Divisions spanned from 1957-1973. He drove for such legendary car owners as Bondy Long (Camden, SC), Ronnie Hopkins (Greenville, SC) and Marion Cox (Hemingway, SC). Some of the notable highlights from his career include: winning the 1962 Georgia State Championship in NASCAR Limited Sportsman Division; winning the 1964 Columbia (SC) Speedway Championship; finishing 3rd in 1964 NASCAR National Sportsman Division and his 2012 induction into the Augusta (GA) International Raceway Hall of Fame. He was honored to induct legendary driver Ralph Earnhardt into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at the request of his family. Ralph was a mentor for Bud since the early days of his racing career. When he retired from driving, he led his family's mechanical contracting business, H.E. Moore Company, for many years. At that time, he concentrated primarily on commercial work across the state of South Carolina. He returned to auto racing as a sports merchandising entrepreneur/agent representing many well-known drivers such as: Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Bill Elliot, Mark Martin, Tim Richmond, and Harry Gant among others. Bud was a trailblazer in revolutionizing merchandise design and promotion for drivers and Charlotte Motor Speedway. He was instrumental in creating and promoting the merchandise for the 1992 Richard Petty Fan Appreciation Tour and the "7&7" campaign for Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. He still owned the cabin in Harrisburg, NC where the campaigns were headquartered and enjoyed spending time there with family and friends. Upon retirement, Bud maintained his involvement in vintage and collector cars. He was delighted to win trophies occasionally at Bessinger's car show in Charleston. He was involved in local car clubs. Bud never met a stranger and had a diverse group of friends from across the country. In addition, he loved live music and was an avid concert goer. Bud was a Christian and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Meggett, SC. He passed away in his home overlooking the river, with his wife, daughter and their beloved dogs and cats at his bedside. He wanted to continue the fight against ALS. TEAM BUD will participate again in the 2017 Lowcountry Walk to Defeat ALS in Charleston on November 4th. To join the team or donate to TEAM BUD in his memory go to link: web.alsa.org/lowcountry2017 or mail a donation in his name to: The ALS Association SC Chapter Attn: Walk to Defeat ALS, 7499 Parklane Rd Suite 144, Columbia, SC 29223, Mention Lowcountry Walk and TEAM BUD. As just a young boy...with my father every Thurs night!
You would find us at the Columbia Speedway. The best racing ever...and my all time favorite was that yellow with red #87 65 Chevelle. The driver Mr. Bud Moore.
Highlights of my childhood with my father. I lost my father a few years back, and I've so enjoyed the wonderful memories of those early days of racing and the great men that made it all happen.

Paul Bud Moore was an outstanding mentor, neighbor and family friend. From the age of 3 years old I always recalled him pulling out his candy apple red Chevy Nova II from the garage across the street from my home on 7 Isabella Street and letting me and the other neighborhood kids get a glimpse of him at work. He and his family were a part of my village in downtown Charleston and I am a better person from my association with them.

Ida
So sorry to hear that Bud has passed. I don't have the words to express my sorry. Bud and yourself were great neighbors to us when I lived at home on Sunnyside. The motorcycle I bought from Bud has a special place in my life and memories. Bud was such a pleasant person I have all ways considered myself lucky to have known him. My wife had met him in the last ten years or so just by chance as he had bought perscriptions from her place of employment in Mt. Pleasant. She had recognized the name from stories she had heard from me. She had found Bud to be a very likable customer and made it a point to serve him herself as he would al ways ask her about me. Please know that you will be in our prayers and that Bud has and will all ways be a bright spot in my life.

Ida and Sherry, I know Bud enjoyed the life he lived doing the things he enjoyed and loved and especially having the two of you by his side all the way with lots of love. God Bless You.

What can I say - our annual fall trip to Charlotte just won't be the same now - camping beside Bud's place & having him "drop by" to pass the time often made our trips to the south much more interesting. His stories & southern hospitality just made us feel like we were becoming "part of something" - a great person who will be missed by all - not the least by his "Canadian" friends who have enjoyed his company for many years now. Our condolences to Ida & Sherry - and God Speed to L'ill Bud - we'll raise a jar for you in October for sure.

I met Paul in Talladega in the May 1993 at a collectible show where I was set up selling little die cast cars. I didn't have any of him, but he found one from another dealer purchased it, then autographed it to me and told me to keep up the my hard work. We became instant friends and worked together of fighting against bootleg and unauthorized collectibles.
We had many things and people in common. Louise Smith, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Jake Elder and many others. I learned a lot from him and will continue the fight against illegal collectibles. Thank You for being my friend Paul. Prayers for Ida and Sherry

Bud, Ida and Sherry are dear family friends. Bud and my dad, Humpy Wheeler, go back to his days as one of the greatest NASCAR short track drivers ever. He was a sincerely kind and wonderful person who adored his wife and daughter and was very proud of both of them. He was exceptionally good at reaching out and keeping in touch with his friends and will be sorely missed. Much love and prayers for Ida and Sherry.
