Patrick Whelan Obituary

Patrick F. Whelan MT. PLEASANT - Pat Whelan, 68, died Monday, March 29, at his home in Mt. Pleasant. Born and raised in Washington, DC, he was a man of many talents and the epitome of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps." With no college education but armed with his personal motto of "perfect enough" he became a successful entrepreneur in Greenville, SC, building his company, Install Inc., from a one-man hardware and specialty installer to the employer of over 50 employees installing high steel, conveyors, and robotic equipment in automotive plants. He accomplished his dream of retiring to Mt. Pleasant to be near the ocean for his love of boating and fishing, but kept his hand in business by becoming the one to call when someone had a particularly challenging hardware or specialty installation. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Susan Whelan; two sons, Robert Whelan (Martha) of Charleston, and Sean Whelan, MD (Rachel) of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Carolyn and Worth Whelan of Charleston, and Charlie Whelan of Pittsburgh; his yellow lab, Annie; and his cat, Bruno. No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Research Institute, www.cancerresearch.org, or the American Humane Society, www.americanhumane.org.
