Patricia Staley Obituary

Patricia Boose Staley COLUMBIA, SC - Patricia Boose Staley, 72, of Columbia, went to the loving arms of her Savior Jesus Christ Friday, March 16, 2012. Born in Augusta, Georgia, on February 7, 1940, she was the only child of the late Ellis Wise and Dorothy Bagby Boose. For many years, Pat was an active volunteer delivering Meals on Wheels and working with the Ronald McDonald House. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church for over 35 years, serving with the Stephen Ministry, as church secretary, Sunday School Superintendent, and as an elder. Faithful to the study of God's Word, Pat was a part of Bible Study Fellowship and was currently attending Community Bible Study. Recently Pat joined First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed worshiping with her family. Pat loved the game of tennis and was a ranked player in Mixed Doubles and Women's Doubles in South Carolina. She also held rankings in the USTA Southern Section. For the past 30 years, Pat contributed to the growth of tennis in the city, state and Southern section. Her contributions to tennis include being instrumental in starting the USTA League program in Columbia, volunteering as a coach in the Jr. Tennis League, and serving as a sectional referee for 25 plus years in Junior, Adult, and USTA League Championships. Pat excelled in her work as a section referee and as a result was recognized by the South Carolina Tennis Association as Referee of the Year in 2001. In addition Pat provided valuable council to the SCTA by serving on numerous committees which helped shape the growth of the game she loved. Pat would be the first to say that her tennis involvement and service were not the most important things in her life. Personal relationships were the hallmark of her faith. That was her ministry. Survivors include her children, Alicia "Lisa" Staley Higgins, and husband, William "Bill" O. Higgins, of Columbia, Kathryn Staley Montgomery MacDonald of Mount Pleasant, and Michael Curtis Staley and Ginamarie A. Staley, of Asheville, NC. Pat is also survived by her grandchildren, Georgia Keller Higgins, William "Will" McQuade Higgins, Robert Cameron "Cam" Montgomery, Kathryn "Katy" Elle Montgomery, Alicia "Ali" Glenn MacDonald, Leah Claire MacDonald, Maris Caroline Staley and John "Jack" Ellis Staley; her best friends, Jeff and Mary Anna Scott, their sons Austin and Patrick Scott and family. Pat was beloved by her children and her grandchildren, who called her Nana. Her love and influence will be with us forever. Maranatha. There will be a memorial service on Monday, March 19, 2012 at 11 o'clock. at The First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion Street, Columbia, with Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson and The Rev. L. Craig Wilkes officiating. The family will greet friends following the memorial service in Jackson Hall. Burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park will precede the service. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice in lieu of flowers. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family. To Pat's children and grandchildren plus her extended family, I want to extend my deepest sympathy to you. Pat was a wonderful "lady" and the friend of many. I did not know her very long but felt I was able to call her my friend. I enjoyed working STA tournaments with her and was even fortunate enough in Dec of 2011 to play with her as my partner at Hilton Head Super Seniors. She was so gracious to give of her time and talents to others.
We grieve here on earth for our own loss of Pat, but we know that she now is free of pain and happy. She will be watching down on us to make sure we do it right. "Now this is the rule".
Always true to the cause, we will miss you, Pat.
Love, BJ

What a beautiful tribute to a wonderful, mother, grandmother, friend and child of the King. I was sitting on my front steps Friday after learning of Pat's passing. My little grandson sat beside me and asked "Mimi, what is wrong, you look so sad?" I told him that a good friend had gone home to live with Jesus, to which he replied: "You will always hold her in your heart Mimi." Out of the mouths of babes! She was a special friend who is missed greatly by all who had the joy of knowing her. You all are in our thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.

Pat was such a blessing to all who knew her and will be missed by all. As she said in one of her last emails to her friends, "You know the Lord has always had me in the palm of His hand. I know I belong to Him and I know where I am going." I am so thankful for her strong faith and witness. My heart goes out to her family and friends during this difficult loss.
