Nancy (Eugenia) James Payne
Charleston - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Nancy (Eugenia) James Payne, who departed this life on Sunday, December 21, 2025 at the age of 85. A funeral service honoring her remarkable journey will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd., with interment to follow at Christ Church Cemetery, 2304 Hwy 17 N., Mount Pleasant. Family and friends are invited to gather at the chapel on Monday, December 29, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm to share memories and offer support.
Born on October 16, 1940, in Charleston, SC, to Truman James and Elizabeth Daniel James, Nancy's life was defined by her unwavering dedication to education, family, and community. As a passionate teacher for inner-city youth, she inspired countless students at Garret High School in North Charleston, where she taught English and coached women's volleyball, basketball, and track. Her commitment to lifelong learning led her to earn a Master's degree at The Citadel while balancing the responsibilities of teaching full-time and raising a family. Later, Nancy brought her expertise and compassion to Norfolk, VA, where she served as a reading specialist, nurturing a love of learning in every child she met.
Beyond her professional achievements, Nancy was renowned for her warmth and hospitality. In both Mount Pleasant and Virginia Beach, she delighted in decorating and hosting gatherings, creating spaces filled with joy, laughter, and love. Her legendary celebrations brought together family and friends, leaving cherished memories for all who attended.
Nancy is survived by her devoted husband, Francis Graham Payne; her children, Elizabeth Payne (David) Young of Champaign, IL; Thomas G. (Nicole Elko) Payne of Folly Beach, SC; and Daniel Andrews (Sarah Elizabeth Harley) Payne of Ranger, GA. She was a proud grandmother to eleven grandchildren-Zack, Meredith, Hannah, Madeleine, J.D., Will, Graham, Ainsley, Sayle, Charlotte, and Forest-and a loving great-grandmother to David and Maisy. Nancy's legacy also lives on through her sister, Carol Drolet of Charleston, SC, and her brother-in-law, Durst Payne.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Truman James and Elizabeth Daniel James, whose love and guidance shaped her into the extraordinary woman she became.
