Milford Hatcher Obituary

Milford B. Hatcher, Jr. KIAWAH ISLAND, SC - Milford B. Hatcher, Jr. died on May 13, 2011, at the age of 63. Mil was an attorney with Holland and Knight in their Atlanta and Jacksonville offices. Mil was a native of Macon and had homes in Atlanta, Ponte Vedra, Kiawah Island and Maui. Mil was a nationally recognized expert in estate planning and specialized in business-oriented estate planning and income tax planning for high net worth individuals. Mil was a nationally recognized attorney and a prolific speaker to top professional groups, including The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the University of Miami Philip E. Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning, the American Federal Tax Institute, the Georgia Tax Conference and the Georgia Society of CPAs. He wrote articles appearing in many professional publications including the ACTEC Journal, the University of Miami Philip E. Mil was one of the top experts in sophisticated private wealth planning techniques with a particular expertise in the use of family limited partnerships and the complex tax laws in that area. Mil was a Regent with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and served on their Executive Committee. For 20 years, Mil was a Partner with Jones Day and served as the firm's Atlanta Tax Group Coordinator Mil was highly respected among his colleagues for his collaborative nature and his leadership skills. He selflessly dedicated his time and energy to helping other lawyers enhance their skills and thus better serve their clients. He made many pro bono contributions to lawyers and his field of practice, devoting hundreds of hours of financially uncompensated work as lead counsel for ACTEC, preparing and filing two amicus curiae briefs for the College in two high-profile family limited partnership cases. In early years he was also an adjunct professor at the Walter F. George School of Law in Macon. Mil was also a trusted advisor and friend to many - clients and colleagues alike. His counsel was invaluable to a wide range of people, especially to young associates whom he took under his wing and mentored. Mil had a very creative mind that helped him in serving his clients but also in real estate development and the ownership of private businesses. Mil and his wife Aileen created the 1842 Inn in Macon and saved the historically significant structure as an historic inn. Mil graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1970 with a B.A. magna cum laude with exceptional honors, Phi Beta Kappa. He attended law school at The University of Georgia and graduated with a J.D., cum laude. In 1975 he earned his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University. Mil was a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia and The Florida Bar. He was past Chairman of the Tax Section of the State Bar of Georgia. Mil generously donated his time to many charitable endeavors. He served as Chair of the Investment Committee of the Medical College of Georgia Foundation, the President of the Macon Heritage Foundation, the Chairman of the American Cancer Society's Macon Chapter and the Audit Committee Chairman of the Kiawah Conservancy. Mil was a member of The Cherokee Town and Country Club, The Kiawah Island Club, and The Kapalua Club. Mil is survived by his wife of 35 years Aileen Ponder Hatcher, his sister Kathleen Hatcher Cook of Musella, and many nieces and nephews in Atlanta, Macon and Washington. Mil was predeceased by his parents Dr. and Mrs. Milford B. Hatcher of Macon. The service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 17, at the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta. The family will greet friends at the church following the service. Interment will be private at Arlington Memorial Park. Aileen ~ I was shocked and saddened today to learn that Mil had passed away. He was such a good friend and adviser to my late wife Michele and me when we first moved to Atlanta. We had mutual friends in Macon and found that we had stayed at the 1842 Inn when you were there running it! What a grand place it was and what many wonderful memories you must have of your life together. Having lost Michele in 2004, I know the grief you must be feeling now and how different your life must be. But I can tell you that you will heal and Mil will always be in your heart and mind helping you to survive. . .and you will.

Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

With heart felt sympathy,

John and Jane Runningen

Mrs. Hatcher,

I worked with Mil at Jones Day several years ago. In his subtle and gentle way, Mil provided me with valuable wisdom and placed his trust in me at a critical time in my career. I will forever remember him for these and other gestures which illustrate the strength of his character. I will miss Mil, yet very much appreciate the chance to have know him. My sincerest condolences to you and your family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. During Mil's time as President of Macon Heritage he was always a mentor and help to me and I cherish the times we spent together. Mrs. Hatcher: We have never met, and I have neither seen nor spoken with Mil since we finished law school in 1973. I have often inquired of others about him through the intervening years...I remember him as being blessed with a gentle spirit even then; I am saddened to hear of his untimely passing and do regret that we ever lost touch...as was proven by his notable career, he was ever the bright and talented person, a credit to his profession...I have no doubt that he was the same with both his family and friends.. respects to Mil from an old friend... Dear Aileen:
Just on a break from court and I wanted to express my sincere sympathies to you and the family.
I was so grateful that Mil and I had a chance to chat when he spoke in Naples last month...we both laughed that none of our high school buddies would believe that I had spent the last 33 years in the judiciary and I had asked him to keep the secret:) He was and is a great guy and will be missed by many...God's grace to you and the family.
