Mercedes Sykora Obituary

Mercedes Geentiens Sykora CHARLESTON - It is with great sadness that the family of Mercedes Geentiens Sykora, announces her passing on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Mercedes (Mimi to her closest friends and family), a true free spirit, was taken from us too soon at the age of 61. She was an accomplished artist, with prints in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress, as well as a published author. She was well known in the Charleston sailing community, having sailed for the College of Charleston. Mercedes was also the first female member of the Charleston Yacht club. Her passion for sailing took her to the Caribbean, where she instilled the love of sailing and bluewater to her children, all while homeschooling them for two years. Mercedes is survived by her former husband, Ron Sykora; her son, Christopher Sykora; and daughter, Stephanie Sykora Kelly. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Bahamas National Park Trust in her name at https://bnt.bs. Besides growing up in Charleston, this was her favorite place. Her Celebration of Life will be held from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM, Wednesday, November 27, 2024. If you are interested in attending, please call (720) 744-0452 for additional information. Arrangements by JAMES A. MCALISTER, INC. (843) 766-1365.

Sorry to learn of the tragic passing of Mercedes. I remember her as a bright and cheerful person and I especially remember the Christmas parties she and Ron hosted for neighborhood friends and families each year at ya'lls home in Longpoint. Gone but not forgotten.
Sincerely,
Wallace Jenkins
