Mr. Davis was born on October 23, 1942, in North Charleston. He was the son of the late Felix Charles Davis and Elizabeth Jackson Davis. He was a member of North Charleston United Methodist Church and former chairman of the Charleston County Democratic Party. He grew up in Garco Village and graduated from North Charleston High School where he was active in sports and student government. He sponsored a bill that brought the Yorktown to Patriots Point. Mr. Davis was a part of the House Leadership Commitee that brought about the resignation of President Richard Nixon. Mendel was well known for providing outstanding services to his constituents. He found great pleasure in helping people. He was recently honored by the Patriots Point Board of Directors by having a traffic circle, near the Yorktown, named in his honor because of his service and devotion to the people of our district and our nation. Jane, Lila, Elizabeth and all the Davis clan. After spending 20 years, give or take, in Mendel's office, I feel like I've lost a brother. Know my thoughts are with you all and I will sorely miss him. I honestly believe that if it were not for Mendel, I wouldn't be here to write this. He was my guardian angel and directed me on the proper path for my physical healing, opening my eyes to just how very sick I was and how much I was denying it. I tried to tell him how much I appreciated what he did for me the last time we were together, and I hope he understood. Mendel and I always said we were family and I truly felt we were. I was privileged to know him. He's home now and he's earned his peace.

Love to all,

Grace Bradley

Jane, Liz, and Lila:
Words can not express how very sorry and sad my family and I are for your loss. Your father was such a wonderful man who did many great things, but most of all he was caring, kind, and loving. I have such wonderful memories of him growing up, too many to list, and I know that Dad is very upset at not keeping in touch over the past few years with him. Just know that y'all are in our thoughts and prayers during this tough time.

To Mendel's Family,
First off, let me say how sorry I am for your heartfelt loss. To loose a loved one is truely a heartbreaking experience. May you find peace within yourselves by knowing that Mendel is now safe and sound in God's loving arms.
I knew Mendel from my childhood, where he used to frequent my Aunt Blanche's florist and home. The rare occassion when he and my Uncle Mendel used to be there together was truely an awesome experience. I last saw him a few months ago at the Re-dedication to the L. Mendel Rivers Library at the Charleston Southern University. Although I had not seen him in years, he recognized me and had a kind word to say about my mother, who had just passed away. It meant a lot to me. That's how he was though, always sharp as a tack and possessing a personal touch that made one feel at home in his presence. On that day, his speech was both articulate and moving. He was always a great speaker, and could easily make people laugh. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. May he rest in peace and may you, his loving family, find comfort in your wonderful memories and eachothers love.

Sincerely,
Laura Premak

To all of Mendel's family,
My heartfelt prayers and thoughts go to each of you at this time. I went to high school with Mendel and all of us had such a wonderful time "growing up" together. We went to church, MYF, and many school activities together.

I knew Mendel was very ill for some time and learned this through his good friend Don Gatch and my cousin Dolores Gatch. Being a nurse, I am aware of the some of the suffereing he must have encountered.

I tried very hard to make it to Charleston for visiting hours or the funeral, but the time between the notice of Mendel's death and the final arrangements was too short a time for me to make travel arrangements from Toledo, Ohio, where I now live. I wish I could have been there to offer my sympathies to all of you.

God bless each of you, and you will remain in my prayers.
