Melissa Shumway Obituary

Melissa Shumway Charlotte, NC- Melissa Alexander Shumway, 71, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2018 at Carolinas Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Trinity United Methodist Church in York, SC with Rev. Josh Blackwelder officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Trinity UMC. Melissa was born April 21, 1947 in Whitmire, SC to the late Flay and Roberta McCarley Alexander. She was a graduate of Columbia College in 1969 and married Robert Alan Shumway, Jr., on June 14, 1970. Melissa was a 20 year music, reading, and special education teacher, and resided in Charleston and Boling Springs, SC since 1985. She loved cooking, singing in the church choir, Clemson football, and most recently watching the Hallmark Channel. Melissa represented Whitmire, SC in the Miss South Carolina pageant in 1965 and 1966, and was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She is survived by her children, Bryan Shumway (Julie) of Charlotte, NC, Suzanne Shumway of Charlotte, NC, grandchildren, Rebekah, Alex, and Emma Shumway of Charlotte, NC, sister Suzanne Jones (Bud) of York, SC, nephews, Chris Jones (Kim) of York, SC, and Andy Jones of Dallas, TX. In addition to her parents, Melissa was preceded in death by her husband Maj. Robert A. Shumway, Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VVS Central High School, Robert A.
