Ms. Hudson was my Social Studies Department Chair when I arrived at North Charleston in 1989. She was a phenomenal leader. She preferred to be called "Maxine," not "Mrs. Hudson." I taught American Government, among other subjects, when Charleston County implemented the first content-based standardized tests in the state...commonly known as County Exams. Furthermore, the scores of my students would be compared to those of students in every other high school in the county, including Wando. Maxine encouraged me from the beginning, assuring me that I would have my students ready. Ms. Hudson never wavered in her confidence in me. She did so much to alleviate the pressure I was feeling internally. A few days after the exams had been given, she knocked on my classroom door, asked me to step outside, and shared the results with me. North Charleston had the highest test scores in the county on the American Government County Exam, including Wando. She just smiled and said she never doubted me. Later, when I was named Principal of NCHS, Maxine Hudson was among the very first to call me with her congratulations. She was AMAZING! I am so honored to have served under her leadership. She made me a better person and a better principal. I learned so much from her. Her impact on her students and teachers has surpassed many generations. RIP, Ms, Hudson. Respectfully and lovingly, David Colwell

So sorry to hear of Maxine’s passing. She was a wonderful friend to my Mom, Betty McMillan Hudson. I have fond memories of visiting with Maxine when I visited my Mom. Love and prayers to her family and especially for Shera.

We will miss our Aunt Maxine. I loved to listen to her talk. Her voice was so soothing and her knowledge was immense. We loved her so much.

She was my high school teacher. She was an inspiration to many, including myself, and was always supportive of my development. I taught at North Charleston for a year while she was still there. I wound up teaching the very same subjects she had taught me.

Shera Lynn, I was so saddened to read of your mother's passing. It brought back many good memories of working on the Blue Devil in your family's home. Your mother was a strong support as we dealt with issues editing the newspaper. I never had your mom as a teacher, but my husband, Bobby, did. He thought she was the BEST!!! He always talked fondly of her when we would discuss our days at NoChas. I am confident your mom left a lasting impression on her students and blessed them with her wisdom and dedication to history. My deepest sympathy to you and all of those whose lives she touched.

Shera Lynn, I was sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was a mentor to me when I started at North Charleston and a good friend . I fondly remember those days and the students that I taught. Your u.S. History class was probably the most enjoyable class I ever had. I am now living in Manchester, GA - about 65 miles from Stone Mountain - raising a grandson (112 years old). May God bless you.

Shera Lynn, may you find peace and comfort in the coming days. To me, your mom was a substitute mom, rather than my teacher (since she requested not to have those of us who were almost like her children in her class), and I remember the wonderful times we had at both your house and mine as we were growing up.

To the family of Mrs. Hudson, please accept my most sincere condolences. Maxine T, as I remember her, was was my favorite teacher of my favorite subject. That being American History. She was strict, stern, and had the knack for opening up a willing mind. I often thought of her through the years and now know she lived a long and hopefully fulfilling life. God Bless . . .

Mrs. Hudson was my 10th grade social studies teacher and my favorite teacher from high school. She taught me things I didn´t learn from any other teacher about real world skills and she was stern but generous. She made a very positive impact on my life.

A true legend has passed. Words cannot begin to describe, how truly amazing this great lady was. Tough as nails, when you walked into her class you better leave all your foolish outside. You were there to learn, whether you wanted to or not. And you did learn.
The generation today could not handle her, a stickler for learning, manners and respect. She sure would put them in their place.
I learned my love of history from her. The world has lost a legend of all teachers. She sure will be missed. It was a true honor to have her as a teacher. NCHS Class of 1988
