MATTHEW TOMLJENOVIC Born February 20, 1935 - Died July 2, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Matthew Tomljenovic. He died peacefully at age 89 on his 69th wedding anniversary and is survived by his beloved wife, Anne. Matt was the loving father of Julie, Mark (Lisa) and David (Stephanie) and devoted grandfather of Eric, Ella, Kate and Parker. Matt was predeceased by his parents, Maria and Thomas of Thunder Bay, Ontario and siblings Jerry and Tom. He is survived by his sister Rose of Winnipeg. Matt grew up in Port Arthur, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) and left to study architecture at Ryerson in Toronto. Matt was guided by a deep sense of integrity, an unrelenting work ethic and boundless determination and drive. He started and led his own construction company, Dean Chandler Waterproofing, and worked on some of Toronto's most recognizable landmarks like the CN Tower and Ontario Place. During his career he was President of the Waterproofing Contractors' Association, President of the Toronto Construction Association, was instrumental in the creation of COCA (Council of Ontario Construction Associations) and was its first chairman. Matt and Anne loved politics and worked on countless campaigns together. Matt was proud of his many professional accomplishments, however, he was most proud of his long and happy marriage to his deeply loved wife, Anne. Their love story started in Thunder Bay when they were teenagers and never wavered during their 72 years together. The family would like to thank his caregiver, Laurie, who took exceptional care of him until the end. Matt will be deeply missed by all who loved him. Friends may join the family at the Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Ave., Markham on Friday, July 19 from 1PM - 4PM. Visitation is at 1:00 PM followed by his funeral and some light refreshments. For those who wish, donations may be made to Parkinson's Canada. Matt has been cremated and his ashes are being sent to Thunder Bay for burial.
