Martha Lee Lemke Barnes
Mt. Pleasant - Martha Lee Lemke Barnes, 70, was peacefully gathered into her Lord's arms early on December 24, 2025.
Martha was born in Greenville, SC on December 30, 1954. In 1970 the family relocated to Annandale, VA, where she finished high school, going on to graduate as a Registered Nurse from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Martha returned to South Carolina to continue her nursing career, working alongside her husband Lt. Cmdr. Bill Barnes as an integral part of the Medical University of SC transplant team. During her 40 year nursing career, Martha also worked at the Charleston Veterans Administration Hospital and the Mt. Pleasant Regional Hospital as a Trauma Nurse, ER Nurse, OR Nurse and Dialysis Nurse Manager. Martha was known for her nursing skill and compassion.
Martha was known for her sweet nature, good humor and as a lover of all animals, especially dogs. Martha was also an artist, working as a glass blower and jewelry maker, selling her custom jewelry through her company Fat Dog Designs. She will be dearly missed by sister, Holly Knight (John) of Atlanta, brother Wray Lemke (Susanne) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and a host of cousins.
The family would like to thank Oak Harbor Healthcare (formerly Mt. Pleasant Manor) for Martha's care in her final years, with special thanks to Tami Scheeler who enabled Martha to live her last years with care and love.

I have fond memories, if very few, of working with Martha at MUSC in the early 80's. Then she started a business making beautiful jewlery which she would display and selll at Marion Square along with other craftsmen. She had a beautiful artistic talent and I found it amazing to watch her create something very delicate and lovely. I have earrings that Martha made. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Lyn Puente James Island
