Margaret Atwater Obituary

Margaret Atwater JAMES ISLAND - Margaret Gordon Finley Atwater, widow of Charles Bynum Atwater Jr., passed away July 30, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. Margaret was born October 19, 1918 in Spartanburg, S.C. to the late Samuel Gwyn Finley and Ruth Caldwell Cofield Finley. She was preceded in death by her brother, Samuel Gwyn Finley II and two sisters, Ruth Finley Weiterer and Anna Clementina Finley as well as two sons, Charles Finley Atwater and Harvey Gordon Atwater. Margaret was a 1939 graduate of Converse College. She was a devoted member of Bethany United Methodist Church and a member of the King's Daughters Speak Kindly Circle. Margaret taught school in Charleston county for twenty years and touched the lives of many students in the area. It was not uncommon for her to recognize one of her pupils and for them to get talking about fond memories. Margaret was a wonderful mother, grandmother and GG. She lived by example and loved the Lord with all her heart. She leaves a family legacy of strength and faith in her surviving children, Daughter Tina Atwater of James Island, son Cofield Atwater (Carol) of Charleston, Robert Atwater of Texas and daughter-in-law, Barbara Atwater of James Island. Nieces Ruth Wakefield, Betty Ann and nephew Sammy Finley. She was the best grandmother ever to Chad Atwater (Missy), Paige Semmes (Ed), Lennie Woods (Denny), Sally Garner (Jerry), Rob Atwater (Kristin), Mason Atwater and Wendy Thrower (Jay). She was the best GG ever in the world and dearly loved her great grands, Hogan, Edmond, Finley, Josh, Katie, Ashley, Sara Margaret, Jacqueline, Tara, Lenna, Griffin and Legare. She was a great friend to countless others that will never forget her grace and wit that she displayed till the very end. She will be greatly missed but live on in the hearts of those that loved her so much, especially her caregiver and best friend Janie. Margaret's family invites friends and relatives to a visitation on Monday, August 5, 2013 at Bethany Methodist Church, Maybank Hwy James Island from 11am to 12:30 pm in the fellowship hall followed by a celebration of her life service at 1:00 in the Sanctuary.
