Marcelle Furchgott Obituary

Marcelle Furchgott Charleston - Marcelle Dorothy (nee Kleinzahler) Furchgott, lifelong resident of Charleston, SC, widow of Max Furchgott, passed away at Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community on Monday, April 29, 2019. Mother of David (Fetneh Askari Fleischmann) of Washington, DC, Gene of Summerville, SC, and Joan (Brad Sourdiffe) of Lincoln, VT; grandmother of Shirin Salerno (Benny) of New York, NY, Seth Milling-Furchgott of Charleston, SC, Asa Furchgott Sourdiffe of Seattle, WA, and Jozie Furchgott Sourdiffe of Miami, FL, and great-grandmother to Luca and Elio Salerno. Born in Charleston on April 5, 1922, to Irving and Josephine Kleinzahler, she married Max in 1940. Together they started and successfully operated Furchgott Studio, Charleston's premiere portrait photography business, for 43 years. At the time of his death, she and Max were devotedly married 58 years, enjoying all aspects of visual and performing arts in Charleston, and worldwide travel with their lifelong friends. In her younger days Marcelle was a Mayor's appointee to the board of the Carolina Art Association at the Gibbes Museum of Art as well as a docent there. Marcelle and Max were also active board members of Print Studio South. A child of the Great Depression, Marcelle had a flair for life and never took her good fortune for granted. She loved, and was greatly loved by, her family and wide circle of friends. A reception in celebration of her life, for family and friends, will be held at Gage Sun Porch, Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gibbes Museum of Art, Department of Development, 135 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or to a local art organization of your choosing. Art and I were talking about Marcelle two days ago! I can't believe it has been a year. She was a constant star in a matrix of remarkable friends of the family. I hope the family is doing well with her passing.

Marcelle was a wonderful constant in my many years of visiting Charleston. I met her and Max the very first time I was there to meet my own future in-laws and thoroughly enjoyed them both. At Bishop Gadsden, no visit was complete without Marcelle and her always warm and positive greetings.

I send love to the entire family.

My deepest condolences upon the passing of this amazing woman. Mrs. Furchgott was a leader and gentle guide to so many. I can still her her voice. From the time she and Max took my engagement photo when I was 21 to the years I was also a docent at the Gibbes, I enjoyed her amazing spirit. May you be comforted by the knowledge that her presence in our world was a shining light.

David, I remember your mother with grace and warmth when I was young and went to their studio. In my dining room. I look up and see a lovely photo in shadow box they did when I was 16. It is a loving memory. I did not know where your path had taken you but hope you and your siblings are doing well. Your Mother's kind words and warm smile will always be a loving memory for me. With prayers, Rosalyn Kramer
