My friend, Lucille Murray Whipper, was very special to me. I met her many years ago at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Association of New Jersey in the early seventies. She was strong in her faith and loyal to her family; children first, her husband Pastor Whipper and to each congregation he was called to serve.
Our great moments together shopping after she drove to my house from East Orange to Maplewood N. J. We would spend the day just shopping for her family first, and then herself and Rev. Whipper. We usually concluded with lunch at the Parkwood Diner in Maplewood with a delicious Reuben sandwich filled with sweet potatoes fries that would last us for the next few days.
Often on my way home from work she would talk me home by phone, and make sure I was in, before retiring for the evening. My nieces and nephews Aretha, Freddy, Jason, Jonathan, and Chris spent many New Year´s Eve in Mt Vernon with the Whippers and Southern Baptist Church. She often liked the way I cooked especially cabbage,
Our relationship remained close even after she relocated to Orangeburg. She did not play. Lucille said what she meant and meant what she said. She was a planner, organizer and executor for the future whether you liked her way or not. The New Jersey Rodgers family, especially Milton, will miss her guidance and love and cherish the special s memories we shared together. She leaves behind a great legacy and role model for Christian women. I will greatly miss her, but fond memories will remain forever.
Love,
