Joseph LaLima Obituary

Joseph LaLima BATESBURG, SC - Sergeant Joseph P. LaLima, passed away on September 12, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Debby LaLima; three children, Joey LaLima, William LaLima, and Katherine LaLima as well as his three cherished grandchildren, Vivian, Eliza and Michael. Joe proudly and honorably served the Charleston Community as a police officer for over 30 years and embodied all that is good about "Protect and Serve". The world is better for having a man like Joe in it, and a little dimmer without. Services will be at the Universal Unitarian Church in Columbia, SC, on 9/30/23 at 2pm.

Mrs. LaLima,

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Sgt. LaLima. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers, and if there is anything I can do please let me know. I always said I was going to come see you all, but never had the opportunity. May he now rest easy and pain free.

Joe was one of the good guys, and possessed a good sense of humor. As Eddie Hoskins said, he was one of those "damn Yankees," an anomaly in a decidedly Southern PD, yet he went about his job effectively and fairly.
Joe fought his illness well, ran the good race, and I pray he is now healed and at peace.

I'm truly going to miss my big brother for sure. Even though we didn't live close to each other, we spent endless hours on the phone through the years sharing our lives with each other. Like a great big brother, he always was there for me any time I needed his advice on something. He was the one who kept me in line and put me in my place. I sure needed it. The realization on never hearing his voice again breaks my heart to pieces. The thought of him not being in his model train room creating his masterpiece brings tears to my eyes. I can feel the silence in that room from 500 miles a way. A part of me died with the passing of my big brother. There is an emptiness in my heart that I never felt before. Rest in peace bother. Till we meet again.

Your heart soon will be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Prayers for comfort. I had the opportunity to work with Joe when I was with CCSO. A great man who will be missed!

My best memory of Joe is : I was a neighbor to Joe and Debby. One afternoon I am cutting the grass in my front yard and I had my back to the street.Joe in his police vehicle came close to the yard and put on his blue lights and siren. If course I jumped sky high and looked to see Joe laughing at me.

My condolences and prayers to Debby and the rest of Joe's family. Joe and I started at CPD in the same recruit class and shared a lot of fun and stories while working there. Add to that, we both were those damn Yankees from NYS to infiltrate the department. Rest in peace brother.
