Guerry. I was shocked today to learn of Jon's untimely passing. It's been years since I've seen him, but remember him fondly from the time he worked for me at Coastal Engineering & Testing in Charleston. My heart is broken for you, as I have a young son who is the apple of my eye, and cannot imagine the grief of losing someone so dear. You are in my prayers today as you celebrate Jon's too-brief life.

I will miss Jon - He was a great Engineer and even better Land Planner. He had a sweet spirit even when he was upset. He loved his family, I never met them but he made me sure of his feelings for them; including when his cat passed away.

I was Jon's roomate while at USC and also had the privelege to work with him for many years. Jon was a very bright and insightful person and had a real gift for interacting with others. Although very successful in the business world, he was self-deprecating and modest, and a compassionate leader.
Jon enjoyed organizing golf outings and had the goal of playing all 100 strand courses at one time.
He enjoyed attending USC Gamecock football games and preferred to sit in the upper deck so that he could observe the entire game's action like a field general. He could relate incredible details of games many years afterwards.
He collected baseball cards and had encyclopedic knowledge of the sport.
He particularly enjoyed reading about world history and would often relate historical events to current ones. He also knew much about the history of South Carolina and counted Francis Marion as an ancestor.
If you ever watched Jeapordy with Jon, you would be humbled by the amount of information he could summon.
He enjoyed progressive rock music, such as Dream Theater where rock musicians actually read musical scores because of the time signature changes and musical complexities.
He had a remarkable Maine Coon cat he named Pollux that accompanyied him to residences in Charleston, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach for about 15 years. (Pollux would entertain by imitating bird noises when watching them through the window with his tail twitching back and forth.) Jon also adopted a stray he named Cassie that had evidently been abused.
I watched many of his eloquent presentations to Planning Commissions and Councils which always served his clients well. I watched him address many a work challenge with grace and a unique knack of understanding. No workplace challenge was too much for him to overcome on behalf of his clients.
Jon had a joy of life and generosity of spirit unlike anyone I have ever met and he will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathies to the family.

I was saddened to here of Jon's death. He was such a kind hearted and creative guy, he will be missed. Jon danced to a different drummer, but at least he danced!
