John Sheppard Obituary

Rev. Dr. John Bunyan Sheppard FOLLY BEACH - Rev. Dr. John Bunyan Sheppard, 88, of Folly Beach, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, April 25, 2023. His Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 30, 2023 in Mariner's Cay Clubhouse, Folly Beach at 11:00 am. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. John was born March 30, 1935 in Neeses, South Carolina, son of the late Bazel Bunyan Sheppard and Lizzie Marie Tindall Sheppard. He received his undergraduate degree from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, graduate degree from Furman University Southeaster Seminary and his Ph.D. from Emory University. John was a tenured professor in the Christianity Department at Mercer University for 20 years. In his retirement years, Captain Jack returned to his early training at the Merchant Marine Academy and became a licensed captain for many years serving the Bohicket Marina. He is survived by his son, Dr. Barry Bazel Sheppard of Oakland, CA; daughter, Sandra Lyn S. Van Valkenburg (Jeff) of Alpharetta, GA; brother, William Macon Sheppard II of Clemson, SC; two nephews: William Macon Sheppard III and Evan Hays Sheppard; and two nieces: Rosemary S. Parham and Gina Sheppard Huckabee. Memorials may be made to Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29613.
