John Grady Obituary

Dr. John Leo Grady MT. PLEASANT - John Leo Grady, 83, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered peacefully into eternal rest Tuesday, August 13, 2024, with his five children at his side. John was born September 5, 1940, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the eldest of four sons of the late John Leo Grady and the late Mary Cavanaugh Grady. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and Temple University Medical School, he was an ophthalmologist for almost fifty years, giving the gift of vision to patients from as far away as Egypt and Ethiopia while a Navy doctor before settling into his 30-year private practice in Mount Pleasant. John will be remembered by all who knew him for his love of family and friends, his strong Catholic faith, his sense of humor, his patriotism and his passion for the game of golf. He enjoyed golf trips with friends to Scotland and Ireland and was a founding member of Bulls Bay, where he played rounds and socialized for more than twenty years. In addition to being proud to score his age, John holds the club record for most holes in one: eight to be exact between 2004 and 2024, including being one of only two club members to boast a sweep of aces on each of the course's five par-3 holes. When not on the links, John could be found sharing stories and jokes in the company of his children and his friends at favorite spots around town. He is survived by his five children, Mary (Jim), Kathleen, John (Jennifer), Joe (Caroline) and Bridget; as well as his brother, Kevin, his former wife Barbara; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by siblings, Dennis and Michael, his wife Jane; and son-in-law Lee Smith. A Funeral Service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 5:00 pm at the J. Henry Stuhr Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. The family will receive friends before the service from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. John will be buried with military honors in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the ALS Association on John's behalf (www.als.org) in the name of Lee Smith. John was THEE BEST! Though he was our eye doctor, he made you feel like a close family friend! So sincere and kind. I actually told him once, doctors should all take classes to be just like him!
To his family, please accept our sincerest condolences. Such a legacy of generosity and love he left behind. Pouring love and prayers of peace over all of you. This world is better for John´s presence and we are better for knowing him. May he rest in peace....well done thou good and faithful servant.

It was a privilege to have worked with Dr. Grady. Patients loved him and the employees respected him. We lost a great one with his passing.

Truly saddened to hear of Dr. John Grady passing away. A man of many prestigious accomplishments including the one that stands out to me most He is a Vetran of The Vietnam War. For that, I have the utmost respect for this man and what he did for this country. Dr. Grady is also the Father of my Dear Friend Joe. I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to my friend Joe and his lovely wife Caroline also my dear friend and their children. My friends, I am so sorry for your loss. I wish I could say something to ease your pain other than the same old cliché. So I will say this. Rest easy Joe, I know that your father walks with Angels and God will take very good care of him. You will see him again. I hate that you have had to face this day, we all will. God Bless You Grady Family my dearest friends.

John will surely be missed. I was a patient of his. He often went with a group of us to Hilton Head for the Heritage golf tournament where we played golf every day until the tournament started.

It was a joy being your patient and I hated it when you retired. Always providing the best care for your patients. Rest from your labor! Job well done!
