John Dash Obituary

John Dash CHARLESTON - John Thompson Dash, affectionately known as "Johnny," passed away peacefully at home on March 15, 2025, in West Ashley, Charleston, SC. Born on November 1, 1929, in the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, John T. Dash lived a remarkable 95 years, dedicating his life to his family, community, and church. John T. Dash was the son of Charles St. Julian Dash and Ethel LeLong Capers Dash, and brother to six remarkable siblings: St. Julian Bennett Dash, Charles Edward Dash, Herbert Wilmont Dash, Samuel Atkins Dash, Roger Evans Dash, and Ernest Alonso Dash, all of whom predeceased him. Raised in a family that valued education and community service, Johnny attended the Avery Normal School, where he and his brothers received their formative education. This institution, which later became the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture at College of Charleston, played a pivotal role in shaping his life, instilling in him a fervent devotion to his community and a lifelong commitment to learning. Johnny attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and later served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Korea. After the military, he was a licensed mortician with The Unity Funeral Home Chapels in New York City, and he retired as a Superior Court Clerk in the City of New York. Throughout his life, Johnny was an active community member. He became deeply involved with the Avery Research Center, a hub of education and cultural preservation within Charleston. His connection to this institution was not just of nostalgia but also of active participation and support. Johnny recognized the importance of preserving African American history and culture and did whatever he could to contribute to the Avery Research Center's mission. One of Johnny's lasting contributions to the community was his involvement with the Humane & Friendly Society Cemetery on Pershing Street. This cemetery, founded in 1856, serves as the final resting place for many influential African Americans, including Johnny's eldest brother, St. Julian Bennett Dash, known for his contributions to the world of jazz music through the renowned original "Tuxedo Junction." Here at Humane & Friendly, Johnny often spent time tending graves and sharing stories, ensuring the legacy of those interred was not forgotten. Though Johnny took pride in his community involvement, his dedication to his church truly defined him. Known for his unwavering faith, Johnny was a devoted member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church on 16 Thomas Street. He lent a helping hand wherever he could and supported those in need. His faith was a guiding light in his life, providing him strength and comfort in trying times. His paternal grandparents, Emma Hoats Adkins and Samuel Bennett Dash, joined the founding members of Mt. Zion Church on Glebe Street. His maternal grandparents, Mary Jane Williams and Edward Edwardo Capers, were members of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Calhoun Street. John Thompson Dash is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, a godson, extended family, and many dear friends who remember him for his gentle spirit, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his community and family. Although he had no children of his own, his nurturing presence touched the lives of many. A memorial service to honor and celebrate Johnny's life will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the Avery Research Center, 125 Bull Street, Charleston, SC. Friends, family, and community members are welcome to attend and pay tribute to an extraordinary man whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that donations be made in Johnny's memory to the Avery Research Center. This will ensure that the education and cultural preservation he valued so deeply may continue to benefit the Charleston community for years to come.

In loving memory of a dear friend. My condolences to the family of a wonderful person, I shall forever remember his gentle voice and beautiful smile.
Many years ago, Johnny welcomed the youth choir into his home to sing Christmas Carols to his mother, Mrs. Ethel Dash, who joined the youth in song.
In addition, Johnny supported the foundation, The Finley Dowling Memorial Foundation and was a member of the Magnolia Umbra Cemetery Association.
I salute a great man.

Thank you for the beautiful and well written obituary. I am now anxious to visit the center. There is always so much to learn from a person of 95 yrs. I was always inspired by Johnny. He was always out working in his yard no matter how he felt and always had a smile. What a treasure he was. I feel lucky to have known him even if it were only for a brief time.

A couple of years ago my daughter and her husband bought a house next door to Johnny. I would see him out in his yard working and go over to say hi. He would always invite me in to drink a Corona with him. I loved listening to him talk of his life experiences and his time in the Korean War. Being new to Charleston he had many stories to share of his younger years here. The last year my seeing him outside was not as frequent and our visits fewer. I did get to drop by and see him his last day but sadly he never knew I was there. I will always treasure our brief but enduring friendship.
