Angie and Glenn,

It was with shock I found John's obit. My friend Lawrence LeaMond passed away a day after John and because of my close releationship with his sister, Lisa, I viewed the Charleston obits and was shocked when I saw John's name.

I will always remeber Shem Creek, you, John, and the staff you both created in the early 80's. As Miss Mary (aka the girl with the legs) would say, "a good time was had by all". I remember running into you guys in Key West with Chip and Dennis. I still have a white "Shem Creek Tee" with "Big John" wearing a pair of shades with a shadow of a girl in a bikini.

I cherish the memories tending bar at Shem Creek and The Common.

God Bless Big John!

Prayers to you, Glenn and Jay.

May God bless us all til we get there......... ANGIE: Thank you for coming into John's life and making him so happy..I will never forget years ago when you were so ill and how visably upset John was..and what a happy day it was when you came back to us all...Thank you for letting us watch Jay grow up...and making your family seem like our family...for such a fitting send-off for John...you did a beautiful job.

JAY: I hope you are doing OKAY ..it does get better and it helps to know that your father was a well loved man...both of your parents have worked hard to build more than a successful business establishment..it's a successful community establishment..your mom will really need you now.If I can ever help you in any way, please pick up the phone..I'm in the book..take care, Jay.

Dear Avinger Family: As a staff of the Disabilities Board of Charleston County, I have had the pleasure of working with your wonderful staff at Shem Creek Bar & Grill. I have always been impressed with the warmth and caring that John & Angie have for all people. This is so obvious by the loyalty & enthusiasm of their employees, even those with disabilities & special needs. Thank you John for giving everyone a chance to be their best. You will be missed but remembered!

I remember traveling to Charleston with Shields and having the pleasure of visiting the three of you several years ago. It became obvious why she always spoke highly of you and John. The apple of her eye during that trip was Jay. I took pictures during that trip and included them in this year's Christmas card to Shields. I am sure will treasure them for years to come. Please know that I am praying for you and Jay during this difficult time.

Angie and Jay,

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your husband and father, and my cousin, "Big John." What a guy and what things you two accomplished. Becoming reacquainted with you guys--and the wild cat--Hurracaine-- 17 years ago, while I stayed with you guys for a couple of weeks has never been lost on me. Jay, for a guy your age this hardly seems fair. My thoughts are with you. God bless the Avingers!
