I'm working at the VA today. A lot has changed here over the years. It is certainly a more complex place. John was such an advocate for improvement of the system to help the Veterans and be a steward with tax payers money. For improvements now the process is so much more cumbersome that change is incredibly slow. I miss his devotion to his work, to his staff, and to his patients. I can assure him that he is not forgotten and we are all better physicians for having had him as our Chief. Elizabeth Sharpe, MD - Ophthalmology

In the fragrant fall of whispering rain
The Unspoken Voice, I heard my name...
And rising softly in morning dew
I soared up there, my spirit renewed
To far beyond and through the opened door
The Prince of Peace and the end of war.

To Dad,
You took me in as your own son and gave me more than I could ever have asked for - unconditionally. This song was one of your very favorites; so is it mine to this very day. I love you, Dad. Thank you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBwuquxfgGs

A simple obituary for an unassuming gentleman who believed that, “One could always be polite and kind.” He was Chief of Surgery at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and Associate Professor with the Department of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. In addition, he was a member of the American College of Surgeons and contributed fifteen publications to professional journals. The VAMC cancer program received American Cancer Society Commission on Cancer accreditation with commendation for many years because of John Allison's dedication to and oversight of the program. He took great pride in being a surveyor for the certifying organization and traveled throughout the United States in the role. Rest in peace, John Allison. You have taught us so much and have enriched our lives for knowing you. Diane Milligan, former Surgical Clinical Coordinator for RHJ VAMC (retired nurse)

Dr. Allison was the best boss anyone could ask for. He always pushed me to be my best and if it wasn't for his support and encouragement, I wouldn't be where I am today with my career. He will truly be missed.

Dr Allison and I go back many, many years. We learned how to take a gallbladder out of a pig at the the VAMC in West LA together in 1992, or around there...Quite a time. Many hours in the middle of the night around the
or table. He treated us all with great respect. He's a good man, and i will miss him.

My heart is sadden and the tears are flowing, but I rejoice knowing that I had the privilge of knowing such a great man. I worked for Dr. Allison in VA's Surgical Service many years ago and ever since that time on, I have admired him as a champion for the medical profession and for veterans. He taught me how to serve with dignty and honor in the midst of adversity or in the midst of peace; always striving for excellence. To me, he was a boss, a mentor and a friend and I will truly miss him and will pray for his family.

I worked with him for 20+ years at the VA. He was always searching for ways to improve delivery of quality health care to our Veterans. Even in his latter years when he was battling severe illness, he continued to work and teach. It was a privilege to have known him.
