Jane Hipp Obituary

Jane Hipp GREENVILLE, SC - Jane Gage Fishburne Hipp of Greenville, SC died at her home May 6, 2015 in Green Valley after a short illness. Jane Hipp was the wife of the late Herman Neel Hipp who died in 1984. Born in Walterboro, SC April 21, 1923, Jane was the daughter of South Carolina Supreme Court Judge Edward Ladson Fishburne and Mary Patterson Gage Fishburne. She attended Converse College and graduated from the University of South Carolina. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority at USC. During WWII she worked at the Ration Board. She was a great supporter of education that started with a small group establishing Christ Church Episcopal School which her 5 children and many of her 18 grandchildren have and are attending. Jane stood beside her husband Herman and helped grow a successful family company, Liberty Life Insurance Company during his lifetime. She was a lifelong member of Junior League of Greenville, Poinsett Club and Green Valley Country Club, which was developed by the family company. Jane and her husband were charter members of The Debutante Club of Greenville. Jane was a philanthropist establishing scholarships at Wofford, Furman and the United Negro College foundation and a member of United Way Tocqueville Society. Jane adored her husband and made the launching gift in 1998 for the Herman Neel Hipp (Hipp Hall) building at Furman paying tribute to his love for Furman and education. She was also a longtime supporter of the Greenville Humane Society. She joined her friends monthly for the Liberty Bells luncheons (wives of leadership at Liberty Life) and enjoyed tennis throughout her life. Jane and Herman's contributions to society have and will continue after their lifetime. Jane was a wonderful mother and an excellent role model to her children and was a fun loving grandmother who reveled in spending time with her grandchildren. Family was the most important thing in her life, and Jane passed on enduring lessons that will be remembered with her legacy. Perhaps the greatest compliment that could be paid to her is that Jane did so much for so many, never asking anything in return. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, and had a voracious appetite for reading. Jane loved spending time with family and friends at their Lake Summit home, as well as at her family's home in Blowing Rock. Besides her parents and husband, Jane was predeceased by her brothers, Lucius Gaston Fishburne, Madison Howell of Walterboro and sister Harriet Howell Stringfellow of Chester, SC. She is survived by sisters Margaret "Sissie" Howell McAngus of Greenville and Martha Howell Guess of Denmark,SC. Jane is survived by five children, Herman Neel Hipp jr and wife Scott, Jane Gage Hipp Caulder and husband Larry, of Greenville, Mary Ladson Hipp Haddow and husband David, William Franklin Hipp and wife, Anne of Atlanta, Ga, Edward Fishburne Hipp of Hendersonville NC. She had 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Grandchildren include Corinne "Corie" Fishburne Hipp Erdman and husband Cole, Herman Neel Hipp III, Timmons Hipp Hendricks and husband Blair, William Richardson Hipp and wife Candice, Jane Fishburne Haddow McLaughen and husband Heath, Anne Jardine Haddow Freeman and husband Matt, Ladson Hipp Haddow and wife Caroline, Stuart Forbes Haddow, Heather Susan Hipp and husband Blake Byrnes, Sarah Gage Hipp, Mary Franklin Hipp, Edward Ladson Hipp, Hannah Green Hipp, Andrew Clayton Caulder , Mary Gage Caulder, Pryce Hipp Caulder, Jeffery Paul Caulder and Cameron Neel Caulder. With love and deepest sympathy to all of your family in Jane's passing. She was a remarkable lady and loved by so many for her countless acts of selfless kindness. She was the last her Fishburne cousins in her generation to go to be with our Lord. I trust there is great rejoicing in heaven that they are all together again.

Please accept my sincere condolences and know that my prayers are with your family. She always showed kindness towards me from the first moment I met her. Surely goodness and mercy followed her all the days of her life because she was blessed with so many.

To each one of the Hipp Family - from the Robelot Family - Please know how VERY special each of you is to each of us. Your Matriarch Jane and your Patriarch Herman were such exceptionally people, such exceptional friends to our parents, Dot and Tom, and to each of us! You are, each one, in our prayers during this time of loss. I'll always remember so fondly coming to your home on Round Hill Road at Christmas time. Jane had the home decorated so beautifully - so warm and inviting - with the prettiest tree and fireplace ever! and Herman would mix a delicious but likely lethal Egg Nog! Even as a young girl I was allowed by my parents to have a small cup! I remember Jane's dedication to getting Goo to the stables for the horse shows and lessons etc... But mostly (as Maya Angelo says) I remember how jane made me feel- Always so loving always so interested in whatever anyone else was up to. She was so phyusically beautiful and so very smart - yet so humble. What a rare combination. But it was never lost on me! I enjoyed exchanging Christmas cards with her as the miles grew and years passed -
I know that Herman and Jane are so joyful in their reunion, and My parents and Jack and Dot Davis, and Frank and Fan Hunt and all of the Liberty family are so joyful right now!
May your hearts be comforted by the love of friends! Blessings - Jane Robelot DeCarvalho

Memories of Jane walking by my home, such a walker! I loved playing tennis with her. She is a beautiful role model to many, in and out of her family, she is one of mine. She has left a strong legacy.
