James Epps Obituary

James Epps LAKE CITY, SC - Mr. Epps was born October 13, 1940, in Lake City, SC, to the late Henry Merchison and Valerie Berniece Rodgers Epps. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Tommie Lindsey Epps, and a brother, Henry Merke Epps. Jimmy was an undergraduate of Georgia Tech University where he played the trumpet and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He was also a graduate of Emory University where he earned a Juris Doctorate Degree. He was a member of The Lake City United Methodist Church, the Lion's Club, Rotary Club, Florence County Bar Association, South Carolina Bar Association, and the Georgia Bar Association. Jimmy served as chairman for the Red Cross for several years and was on the Board of Directors for The Carolina Academy. He worked for the FBI and was a teacher and professor for 3 years. Mr. Epps founded the Lake City Development Corporation and was the city attorney for Lake City for 42 years, Scranton for 33 years, and Pamplico for 15 years. Of all the accomplishments he received during his 73 years, his proudest accomplishment was being named "Father of the Year" in 1989. Survivors include: children, Helen (Jeff) Gardner of Hemingway, SC, James (Beth) Epps, II of Lake City, SC, and John (Beth) Epps of Lake City, SC; his fiance' of 12 years, Laura E. Moody of Charleston, SC; sister, Kaaron (Steve) Collins of Lake City, SC; brother, Eddie (Karon) Epps of Scranton, SC; grandchildren, Valerie Lynn Gardner, Thomas Harrison Gardner, Jaimee Elizabeth Epps, Collin Matthew Epps, and John Wellington (Wells) Epps, II; several nieces and nephews; numerous dear friends and his beloved cat, T.L. Epps. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Friday December 6, 2013, at Brockington Funeral Home of Lake City, SC. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday December 7, 2013, at The Lake City United Methodist Church with burial to follow at The Lake City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice PO Box 100551 Florence, SC 29506 or to Lake City United Methodist Church 229 W. Main St. Lake City, SC 29560.
