James Dodd Obituary

James Spencer Dodd CHARLESTON - James Spencer Dodd, 81, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of JoAnn Williams Dodd, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 14, 2024. His memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2024 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel at 4:00 pm, and the family will receive friends beginning at 3:00 pm. Jim was born November 7, 1943 in Boston, Massachusetts, son of the late Samuel Spencer Dodd and Mary Hymers Dodd. Jim served in the US Navy as a submariner on the USS Chivo. He graduated from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor's in biology, and proceeded to work as a research specialist at Westvaco Chemical, where he retired after 28 years. Jim was also an avid reader, collector, and historian especially in the military and study of war. He enjoyed reunions with his Navy veteran friends. His keen wit and world view would make you certain he was a long lost cousin of George Carlin. In addition to his wife of 37 years, Jim is survived by his son, John "Skip" Williams, Jr. (Kelly); daughter, Laura Myers (Bill); grandchildren, Brooke Williams and Megan Williams; nephews, Dr. Rob Groves (Caroline) and Kenneth Groves (Laura); niece, Dr. Rebecca Groves Laliberte (Doug); as well as several great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Mary "Sal" Groves. Memorial donations can be made in Jim's memory to Tunnel To Towers, a charity that builds handicap accessible housing for wounded Veterans and their families.
