HARVEY, JR., Herschel Herschel A. Harvey, Jr., age 77, businessman and glass manufacturer, died Sunday, July 22, at the Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro, South Carolina. Herschel (Hersh) was born in Steubenville, Ohio in 1929, but resided in Wellsburg, West Virginia. He attended schools in Wellsburg and college at John Carroll for one year and then transferred to Notre Dame. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1951. He then went through OCS at Newport News, Virginia and was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was stationed in the Philippines. After service in the U.S. Navy, Herschel was employed by the Brunswick Corporation in the corporate offices in Chicago, Illinois as the Corporate Industrial Relations Manager. In 1964 he joined his family business a glass decorating firm in Salem, West Virginia. In 1965 he established Harvey Industries in Clarksburg, West Virginia. That company produced hand-blown glass for the lighting industry. When that company was sold in the early eighties, Herschel, while residing at Debordieu Beach, South Carolina, developed two new companies, Har-Lite Glass and Hersh Harvey Associates, Inc. Hersh Harvey Associates, Inc. continues today under the direction of Thelms Harvey and their son, Herschel A. Harvey, III. Hersh and Thelms moved from DeBordieu Colony to Brickyard Plantation in Mount Pleasant in 1999 and celebrated 40 years of marriage in 2004 by sailing on the inaugural voyage of the Queen Mary 2. Hersh's main love was the Notre Dame football team, The Fighting Irish. Mass will be held in his honor at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, Lowcountry Chapter, PO Box 80459, Charleston, SC 29416-0459.
