Henrietta Evatt Obituary

Henrietta Jones Evatt MT. PLEASANT - Henrietta Jones Evatt, 91, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Her Memorial Service will be held, Wednesday, May 29, 2024 in Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt St., Charleston, SC 29401, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Interment will be private. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel. Henrietta was born September 9, 1932 in Savannah, Georgia, daughter of the late John Marshall Jones and the late Henrietta Mikell Jones. She attended the University of Georgia for 2 years after high school then graduated from the College of Charleston in 1986 with a degree in Philosophy. Henrietta was a master gardener, and one of her greatest pleasures was working in her yard as she had a deep appreciation for nature and the simple things in life. Throughout her life, she loved being in and on the water, working in her garden and reading a good book. Her greatest friends were made at Abide-A-While Nursery, where she worked part-time for many years, and at Bethel United Methodist Church, where she served on multiple committees and was a member of the Kendrick Rodgers Circle. Henrietta was also a member of PEO International, Daughters of the Confederacy, Lowcountry Open Land Trust, and Gibbes Museum of Art. Her greatest joy was being with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by four children; Rebecca "Becky" Evatt Frederick (Phil) of Mount Pleasant, SC, Benjamin Hall Evatt (Peggy) of Athens, GA, H. Mikell Evatt of Mount Pleasant, SC, Lyla Evatt Hudson (Charles) of Johns Island, SC. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Kim Frederick, Ben Frederick, Rosalind Sprinkles, Clay Evatt III, Lindsay Resler, and Rebecca Hudson; four great-grandchildren; and brother, H. Mikell Jones (Jane Harmon) of Atlanta, GA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Marshall Jones, Jr. Memorials may be made to the Evatt Scholarship Fund, c/o Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt St., Charleston, SC 29401, Lowcountry Land Trust, 635 Rutledge Ave. #107, Charleston, SC 29403, lowcountrylandtrust.org/ or an organization of one's choice.
