Harry Scott Jr., 81, a resident of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of this area, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at his summer residence at Penn Lake Park Borough following an illness.
Mr. Scott was born in Wilkes-Barre, son of the late Harry and Myrtle (Tippett) Scott and was a graduate of the Class of 1941, Hanover Township Memorial High School. He attended the former Bucknell Junior College (now Wilkes University), Wilkes-Barre, and received a bachelor of science degree in commerce and finance, and a master of science degree in education from Bucknell University, Lewisburg. He had also done post-graduate work at Clemson, Penn State, Lehigh and Shippensburg universities. He had been employed by Jayne's Grocery Store, the Pennsylvania Railroad Freight Terminal and as an assistant office manager for Woodlawn Dairy, all of Wilkes-Barre, for several years. During World War II, he served with the Army in Europe and as a Technician 5th Grade with Company C, 257th Combat Engineers Battalion and had earned the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal.
He had been an educator most of his life and had been a business teacher in the Williamsport School District for several years. He was later employed by the former Kingston school district, which became Wyoming Valley West School District in 1966, where he had been a business teacher, guidance counselor and career education coordinator, retiring as assistant principal of the Wyoming Valley West Middle School in 1983. He had moved to Florida in 1983 and had a summer home at Penn Lake Park Borough.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Wilkes-Barre, serving as a Deacon, member of the Brotherhood, Friendship Class of the Sunday School, and had served as Treasurer of the Church's Board of Deacons for many years. He was a member and past master of the former King Hiram Lodge 721, F&AM, Wilkes-Barre (now Landmark Lodge 442); life member of Caldwell Consistory; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; Bloomsburg and Irem Temple, Wilkes-Barre, where he had been a member of the Stagecrafters Unit. He was a former member of t~he Forty Fort-Kingston Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are his wife of more than 60 years, Florence Jayne Scott, at home; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert H. and Debbie Scott, Penn Lake; Richard A. and Sandra Scott, Kingston; grandchildren, Robert Scott Jr., Wilkes-Barre; Kevin Scott, Penn Lake; Craig and Christa Scott, Swoyersville, and Larissa Scott, Kingston; great-grandchildren, Debra and Ethan Scott, Swoyersville; brother, Donald A. Scott, Lake Hopatcong, N.J.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. James Breeze and the Rev. Shawn Walker, co-pastors, First Baptist Church, Wilkes-Barre, officiating. Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas.
Friends may call Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Landmark Lodge will conduct Masonic services Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
