Guy Jeter Obituary

Guy Jeter Mt. Pleasant - Guy Wilburn Jeter, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., passed on January 19, 2021, after a 19-year battle with Parkinson's disease. Guy, the son of the late John McDow Jeter and Eunice Wilburn Jeter, was born in Union, SC on March 18, 1948. He graduated from Union High School and then received his BA in English from Davidson College. Guy is survived by his wife and soul mate of 50 years, Deborah Williams Jeter of Mount Pleasant, and children who deeply loved him, Cecelia Jeter McPhail and her husband, Fred, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Guy Wilburn Jeter, Jr. of Okinawa, Japan. In addition, Guy leaves two granddaughters who adored their Papa, Grace and Miriam McPhail; his brother, John McDow Jeter, Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Richmond, Virginia; and his sister, Susan Palmer Jeter, and her husband, Alan Adler, of Topanga, California. Guy was beloved as a brother by his in-laws and as Uncle Guy to his nieces and nephews. Guy was a teacher of English and Geometry and mentor to many students at May River Academy in Bluffton and Trident Academy in Mount Pleasant. For 8 years he shared his love of learning as he inspired students to be their best selves. Building on a family tradition in retail, Guy started The Registry Gift Shop in Mount Pleasant. Then, following a life-long passion for building, Guy developed a respected construction business noted for thoughtful attention to clients' needs. Although raised in the Upcountry, Guy put down Lowcountry roots and enjoyed sharing time on the water with those he loved. Whether fishing, sailing in Charleston Harbor, creek cruising, or diving in the Caribbean, Guy embraced every opportunity to share his love of the sea. Guy was an inspired entertainer, the consummate host, and a generous man who loved to laugh. An evening at "Club Jeter" guaranteed a delicious meal, robust conversation, and Guy's impeccable devotion to his guests. His joy of entertaining was fueled by Guy's endless thoughtfulness and deep love for family and friends. Funeral services will be private due to COVID-19. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Roper Hospice Cottages for their care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to JDRF-Piedmont Triad or Parkinson's Foundation Carolinas. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Where to start
I met Guy 27 or so years ago when I was working for a local millwork company and with his work partner Rick had a great relationship and it felt like a business/friendship deal. When I was let go from that company for Guy stepped in and raised hell with that company and said they made a huge mistake It gave me the idea of starting my own business and 25 years later I am doing great and my business is booming. I still think about a job I did for Guy on Gadsen street where he said Bill you need to make some money on this and then when I gave him the quote he replied not retire
When he and Rick approached me with the pine to make the beds another great memory.
He is missed

Dear Debbie. We were so sorry to hear of Guy's death. We have many memories of times together with you at Carl and Stephanie's and knew of their love for you. Guy had a huge presence and you always knew when he walked through the door. He was funny, entertaining, and so enjoyable to be around - but also he was a good listener and made you feel special and cared for when you talked with him. We watched the memorial service together and cried as the pictures portrayed your wonderful life together. Your witness as a loving family will touch many people. Please know that you are in our thoughts. Love, Betty and Roy Hills

i think of Guy often since a wonderful new year's eve party he prepared with a magnificent South Carolina meal for all of us. We stood together on the roof he house he had just built fot Laurie and Otway. The view of Charleston Harbor was breathtakingly beautiful in the full moon.
Guy was the gentlest gentleman I ever knew.

The building of our house by Jeter and Pohl

We were so lucky to have been a friend of Guy and the also having he and Rick Pohl as our builders.. I believe I spent more time with Guy while our house was being built than I did Jim!! One of his most famous quotes during the trials and tribulations of building our forever home was: " There are no problems, only solutions." Also, toward the end of the building process, he said that our house was as" nice as candy."

Guy was a wonderful, kind person and will be missed by so many. Jim and I send our deepest sympathy to all the family.

I have amazing memories of Miss Eunice and Guy at Wilburn's department store in Union. A Union native myself, I worked at Wilburn's as a gift wrapper and cashier in high school. Later on, Guy ran the fine china section on the mezzenine floor at Wilburn's, where I learned "china 101" from him after my engagement. He had an enormous flair, was so gracious, accommodating, and entertaining. I too live in the lowcountry for more than 30 years now, and I happily patronized The Registry in MP. Guy and his family were gems in Union, and I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. Prayers to his precious family.
