Glenna Hughes Obituary

Glenna J. Barrs Hughes Greenwood, SC - Mrs. Glenna J. Barrs Hughes passed quietly into eternal rest on April 23, 2019 at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood, SC. Glenna was 81 years old at the time of her home going and suffered from organ failure due to pneumonia. Her graveside service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 11:00 am at Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406. Glenna reaffirmed her salvation by Jesus Christ in the days before she fell ill. Glenna participated in church activities at Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church (Hanahan, SC), Mandarin Presbyterian Church (Jacksonville, FL), Summerville Presbyterian Church (Summerville, SC) and Greenwood Presbyterian ARP (Greenwood, SC). Glenna was born in Mayo, FL on November 22, 1937. She was predeceased by her mother and father Dovie T. Barrs and Eddie C. Barrs. She later moved to North Charleston, SC where she graduated from Chicora High School, and married Howard F. (Buddy) Hughes, Jr. She began her working career as a secretary in the USAF Wing Commander's office. She accepted a promotion to the Pentagon, where she rose quickly through the ranks to become a Contract Manager. Glenna is survived by her four children; Howard (Butch) F. Hughes, III and Elizabeth Boggs (Phoenix, AZ), Susan H. Whiting and Brian L. Whiting (Greenwood, SC), Lisa (Kim) Howard and John M. Howard (Jacksonville, FL), and David Benjamin (Ben) Hughes (Hanahan, SC). She joyfully celebrated the arrival of grandchildren (Jeffrey Whiting, Jacinta Whiting, Elizabeth Whiting Pierce, Ph.D., Matthew Pierce, Katherine Whiting Johnson, M.D., Brett Johnson, Caroline M. Howard, and William W. Howard) and great-grandchildren (Susanna Johnson, Alexander Whiting, Thomas Johnson, Christopher Whiting, Madeline Whiting, Rosemary Johnson, and Henry Johnson). Glenna made an impact in Mayo, Fl, N. Chas, SC, Washington, D.C., Mt. Pleasant, SC, Summerville, SC, and finally Greenwood, SC. She traveled abroad and within the USA to many sites and enjoyed them all. Glenna was a strong supporter of Guiding Eyes for the Blind, veteran support groups, and the National Wildlife Fund and desired gifts be made to them in her memory in lieu of flowers.
