Georgia Croffead Obituary

Georgia Pappas Croffead JOHNS ISLAND - Georgia Pappas Croffead, 89, of Johns Island, South Carolina, widow of Dr. George S. Croffead entered into eternal rest Monday, September 3, 2012. Funeral Services will be held in Greek Orthodox Church of The Holy Trinity, Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 12:00 noon. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL Wednesday between 5:00 and 7:00 pm with a Trisagion Service at 6:00 pm. Georgia was born April 9, 1923 in, Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Nicholas Pappas and Irene Polycronopoulos Pappas. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity 30 Race Street Charleston, SC 29403. She was a member of The Country Club of Charleston, Garden Club of Charleston and the Charleston Symphony. Throughout her life, Georgia exemplified service to the Greek Orthodox community at the national, diocesan and local levels. She held many offices including President, Daughters of Penelope; Charter Member, Executive Board and President, Ladies Philoptochos Society; Chairperson, Bicentennial Hellenic Community; State Chairman, L.O.G.O.S. of South Carolina; Vice President, Diocese Philoptochos; Member, National Philoptochos Board. Georgia and her beloved husband, George, were honored as Godparents to the St. Photios Shrine in St. Augustine, FL during the dedication of this historical site that represents where the people of Greece first landed in America. She took pride in her culture and the numerous awards and accolades she received were highlighted by His Eminence, Archbishop Iakovos, when he presented her with an award for outstanding service to the Greek Orthodox faith. Metropolitan Alexios also honored her with the prestigious Archangel Michael Award. The love and dedication with which she served her beloved church is exemplified by the gift of the sacred iconography in the dome of the Greek Orthodox Church in Charleston. Georgia, our 'Nana', the matriarch of the Croffead family, lived a full life as a wife, mother, servant and friend. If Nana wasn't in the kitchen, she enjoyed crocheting, writing a hand-written note or working on a project for the Archdiocese of North America. She took immense pride in having the generations come together for 'Monday night dinner' feasts. Her grace and beauty were shown not only in her elegant appearance but more so in the perfection created in entertaining and hosting various events and holidays. Leaving this earth, it gives our family peace to know our sweet Nana is dancing in the arms of her beloved George once again. May her memory always be eternal! She is survived by her son, Dr. Tommy G. Croffead (Pattie) of Charleston, SC, daughter, Sandra E. Veronee (Michael) of Johns Island, SC, grandson, Dr. Jamie D.
