RIVERS, JR., G.L. Buist

Entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 26, 2006 George Lamb Buist Rivers, Jr. husband of Carroll Weitzel Rivers. He was born in Charleston a son of the late George Lamb Buist Rivers and Ethel Rutledge Rivers on Thursday, November 12, 1931. Mr. Rivers was a graduate of the Episcopal High School in Virginia, Davidson College and the University of Virginia Law School. While at Davidson College he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He honorably served in the United States Army for two years. Buist was a partner with Hagood, Rivers and Young from 1959-1965, then a senior partner and one of the founders of Young, Clement and Rivers from 1965-1986 and became of counsel in 1987. He was past president of the St. Andrew's Society and the St. George's Society. He was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, the Society of the Cincinnati of S.C., the S.C. Society, the Carolina Yacht Club, Widows' and Orphan's Society, the S.C. Bar Association, Kiwanis Club, Middleton Hunting Club, the Charleston Club and Middleton Place Hounds of which he was a founding member and a Master from 1980 until his death. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Trident United Way, Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company, Detyens Shipyard, William M. Bird and Company and Central Railroad of S.C. Buist was President of the Charleston Lawyers Club and President of the Estate Planning Council of Charleston. His life long passion for fire engines led to him being the head of the Board of Firemasters for the City of Charleston. One of his favorite activities was fox hunting. He was on the Board of Directors of the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America for twenty-one years. He was the Danish Consul for North and South Carolina and was a Knight of the Order of Danenborg, First Order. Mr. Rivers is survived by his wife: Carroll W. Rivers; a son: G.L. Buist Rivers III; a daughter: Reinette R.Boucher; a brother: Dr. Thomas P.R. Rivers and four grandchildren of whom he was inordinately proud, Buist Rivers IV, Eliza Lee Rivers, Alexander Boucher and Caroline Boucher. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. George Lamb Buist Rivers, Jr. are invited to attend his Memorial Service at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, October 29, 2006 at St. Phillip's Episcopal Church. There will be another Memorial Service in Cashiers, N.C. at the Church of the Good Shepherd in the near future. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers a donation in his memory be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements by JAMES A. McALISTER, INC. 766-1365.
