George Nutt Obituary

NUTT, George CLEMSON - George B. Nutt, 98, died July 15th in Clemson, SC. He was born August 26, 1908 in Enterprise, Mississippi. He was the son of the late George Hiram and Jennie Bass Nutt. Mr. Nutt graduated from Clarke County Agricultural High School, Quitman, Mississippi, in 1926. He received a B.S. degree from Mississippi State University in 1930 and a M.S. degree from Iowa State University in 1940. His professional career began with International Harvester Company in 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. In 1932 he joined the faculty of Clemson University as a professor of Agricultural Engineering. From 1941 to 1955, Mr. Nutt served as department head of Agricultural Engineering. In 1950 he took a leave of absence from Clemson to work for the World Bank serving in Syria, Iraq, and Paraguay as a consultant for farm mechanization. In 1955 Mr. Nutt was appointed director of the South Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. He held this position until his retirement in 1968. Following his retirement, Mr. Nutt worked with Rochester Real Estate Co. in Seneca. Mr. Nutt was appointed to the Pickens County School Board in 1954. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the South Carolina State Fair. He served as president of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers from 1954 to1955. He served as a member of the Republic of Sudan's Agricultural Research Advisory Committee from 1956 to 1969. He was a director of Fort Hill Savings and Loan Association. He was a member of IPTAY AND a member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church. Mr. Nutt was a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Clemson and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers, and was also named a Distinguished Engineering Fellow by the College of Engineering at Mississippi State University He is survived by his sons George and wife Barbara of West Chester, PA, John and wife Patsy of Little Mountain, Richard and wife MaryAnn of Demorest, GA, and Gerry and wife Cathy of Easley; grandchildren Douglas Adams, Lindsay Adams, Johnny Nutt, Kathryn Michalski, Jim Nutt, Sister Mary Christa, R.S.M., Andrea Falce, Georgianna Nutt, David Nutt, and Brad Nutt; 8 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and Mrs. Nancy Nutt of Hatboro, PA. Mr. Nutt was predeceased by wives Donna Mae Nutt, the mother of his children, and Juanita Hodgens Nutt, sisters Gladys Ward, Blanche Kelly, and Oneita Nutt. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11am at Woodland Cemetery, Cemetery Hill, on the Clemson University campus, conducted by the Rev. Thomas C. Davis, Rector Emeritus of Holy Trinity Episcopal Parish in Clemson. Mr. Nutt's grandsons will serve as pall bearers. The body is at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central-Clemson Commons. The family is at the home on 137 Folger Street, Clemson. Memorials may be made to the George B. Nutt Endowment Fund at Clemson University or the George Bass Nutt Scholarship Fund at Mississippi State University. Mr. Nutt was a professor to me in 1944 and probably one of the nicest men I have ever known. He made all of his students love and appreciate him.
