George Debnam Obituary

George Debnam, Sr. MT. PLEASANT - George Ferguson Debnam, Sr., 85, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of the late Betty Stehmeier Debnam, entered into eternal rest Saturday, August 9, 2025. His Funeral Service will be held Monday, September 22, 2025 in the St. Andrew's Historic Church, 438 Whilden Street, 2:00 pm. Reception to follow in Sam's Hall. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel. George was born December 29, 1939, in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Thomas F. Debnam and the late Dorothy Solomon Debnam. George was raised on the Citadel campus in Charleston. He graduated from Rivers High School in 1957, where he was a standout athlete in football and basketball - and where he met Betty, the love of his life. After graduating from the University of Virginia, George and Betty returned to Charleston, where George began his professional career at Westvaco. While working, he earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. In 1969, George and Betty welcomed their son, George Jr. George's career with Westvaco led the family to Yardley, Pennsylvania, where he commuted to Manhattan for work. During their nine years in Pennsylvania, George developed a passion for running and proudly completed the New York City Marathon. In 1983, the family returned to Charleston, where George began a successful career as a financial advisor with Robinson Humphrey and earned his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. He later founded Debnam Financial Services with his son, George Jr., eventually retiring in 2024. George's life was guided by his profound love for God, his family, and his friends. He was an active and devoted member of St. Andrew's Church and poured his heart into serving others through Water Mission and Three Rivers Outreach. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, perseverance, and kindness. Predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Debnam, he is survived by his son, George Debnam, Jr; three grandsons, George F. Debnam III, John T. Debnam, Finley B. Debnam and their mother, Justa Debnam. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in George's name to St. Andrew's Church Attn: Finance Office, 440 Whilden St., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 or Three Rivers Outreach: PO Box 1658, Mount Pleasant, SC 29465. A memorial message may be sent to the family on our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.
