George Covington Obituary

George Bell Covington MANNING, SC - George Bell Covington, 91, widower of Mary Gray Covington, died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. Born May 16, 1920, in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Jonathan Reedy Covington and the late Beaulah Timmons Covington. He was a WWII Army Air Corps Veteran, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of First Assembly of God in Manning and was affectionately known as "Mr. Happy". He is survived by a daughter, Marsha Covington Shorter (Charles) of Manning; a stepson, Benjamin Driggers (Flora) of Sumter; a brother, William Kenneth Covington of Salters; a sister, Vivian O. Hill (Don) of Hamilton, MT; three grandchildren, Craig N. Shorter (Sylvia) of Goose Creek, Heather S. Moore (Ted) of Duncan and Amy S. Painter (Andrew) of Gaffney; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Revs. Sam Neal and Don Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Clarendon Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Craig Shorter, Ted Moore, Andrew Painter, Joel Jones, Charlie Jones and Rock Holladay. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Disabled American Veterans. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
