Earl Anglin Obituary

Earl Brady Anglin SUMMERVILLE - Earl Brady Anglin died on September 23rd at MUSC after a brief illness. He was born in Burnsville, NC, on September 3, 1930, and was the only son of Gobel Anglin and Victoria Melton. By the time he was 16, Earl decided to leave the hills of North Carolina and join the Navy. His first assignment was aboard the USS GURKE, a destroyer deployed during the Korean conflict. He was part of Operation Redwing, the series of hydrogen bomb tests conducted at Enewetak Atoll. During his navy career he was a machinist's mate, a Damage Controlman, and Master Diver. His awards included four "Good Conduct Awards", "Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asian Clasp", "China Service Medal", "United Nations Service Medal", "National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star", "Korean Service Medal" and "Korean Presidential Unit Citation Badge". After retiring from the Navy in 1967, he eventually worked as a rigger for the Charleston Naval Shipyard. However, it was at the shipyard that Earl requalified as a diver and joined the diving unit, becoming the supervisor of the shop. Earl retired from the shipyard in January of 1989 and began pursuing his other passions that included hunting and fishing. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church for almost 50 years. Earl is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Anglin; his two daughters, Marty Davis (Alan) of Columbia, SC, Bobbi Anglin of Tucson, AZ, one son, William Anglin (Diane) of Goose Creek, SC; four granddaughters, Elizabeth CaiMei Davis and Lynn Li Davis of Columbia; Miranda Eikenberry (Matt) of Charleston and Jordan Anglin of Tucson, AZ. The funeral service will be this Friday, September 28th, 11:00 am at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Summerville, SC. Friends are invited to join and visit with the family following the service in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Luke's Capital Campaign. I will always remember the warm family ties we shared in 1963-1964 in Holy Loch Scotland. My sisters and I were always happy to hear that we were going to visit the Anglins. Mr. Anglin, the strong, funny Navy diver in the frigid waters of Scotland, was a great guy--and we loved seeing the Anglins kids and Betty was always ready to have a good laugh. My deepest condolences to the Anglin family. May you treasure the many good memories. Your husband and father was quite a man. We'll all miss him.
